it has done this once before

but i wake up and it like decided to defrost itself without warning

so there's water all over the floor and everything in the freezer is like thawed and the freezer is dripping lots of water into the regular fridge part which still seems cool but i don't really know since the door has been closed.

what is going on? how do i fix it? this is so annoying.

does the light come on when you open the lower door? if so your compressor might have failed...if not, check the breaker panel

^^ i know but last night i noticed it didn't seem very cool in the freezer part so i like moved everything around to make sure the vents or whatever weren't covered (remember that time my icecream kept thawing? i figured i just had too much shit in there) and i made sure the doors were TIGHTLY closed.

^ yes the light comes on. i'm totally fucked aren't i?

in that case, are you sure all the water it's leaking is coming from the freezer? did you have a lot of ice in it? does the water it's leaking smell/look funny? do you ever hear the fridge "kick on" and humm like it's running (now, that is)?

i'm no fridge mechanic, i'm just working with a conceptual diagnosis here, but sounds like a) burnt-out compressor or electrical malfunction thereof, or b) leak in refrigerant line making it ineffectual

well it just SEEMS like the freezer cause its all dripping down into the fridge part and then there's wet all over the floor.

doesn't seem to smell

and no ice in the freezer at all - i leave my icemaker off cause the ice here tastes funny. and there wasn't like ice building up anywhere else. just looked like a normal freezer. and i only had like 3 things in it this time so i doubt it was overcrowded.

goodbye value club box of taquitos '

oh yea and i haven't heard it hum in a long time. it just seems dead.

ah, my amateur opinion is a) then

unless...you just have the thermostat turned way down. look inside the fridge (not freezer) toward the back/top (usually) for a dial and crank it all the way cold. see if you hear anything kick on like a fan or motor

You never put any baby cow in it. You didn't show it that you appreciate it. Now go, kill a baby cow and put it in the fridge. Reward it.

Also you could have an ice buildup between the freezer and fridge. Do you have a channel that runs from the middle top of the fridge part to the back? Is it dripping out of there?

If yes, then you likely have a clogged drain line. This can cause the water channel to backfill and not run off when the defrost cycle runs. This happened to me a few months ago and the water filled the section under the freezer with ice, killing the effectiveness of the cooling coils. I didn't notice until the damn freezer fan got clogged with ice. Two ways to tell for you. First, look under the fridge in the drain pan and see if it is empty and dry, or if its damp and full. If it has water in it, then this is not the problem. If it is dry, then take that channel off from the top (its usually a single screw) and slide it out from the back of the fridge. If the water doesn't drain, get a turkey baster, boil some water, and shoot it down the drain hole in the back of the fridge. If that doesn't fix it, you may need to remove the plug in the back of the fridge and clean it manually; it can get coated up with shit over the years.

^^Don't listen to NeuseRivrRat. The fridge I have is as old as me and still runs like a top. They just need to be maintained. As long as the compressor doesn't let go, you are okay. If you spin the timer and you hear it click and come on (and maybe the lights blink/dim/surge) then the compressor is coming on. There are multiple other things that could cause this (low on refrigerant, or the timer is dead) but those are also not overly difficult fixes. You'll need a technician to do that shit though.

If this was true, then you need to check in the cooling part of your fridge as well for ice buildup. Where you took the channel off at the top of the refrigerator section, look up with a flashlight and see if ice is built up. If so, you need to take everything out of the freezer, pop the freezer floor up (just held down by screws) and try and break that ice loose. You can't just chisel it though because your cooling lines are located here. What I did was took a very small drill bit and drilled through the top of the fridge through the ice. Then I took a hairdryer and melted the ice off the cooling coils and dried it all up with towels. Then I put that shit back together and its been running fine ever since.

OK

i called my dad. this happened once before. it clearly isn't new. its supposed to be a frost free freezer but it doesn't ALWAYS work

so he said to unscrew the bottom part of the freezer (that is where all the water is) and he said it probably froze last night and then once it was clogged or whatever it started melting so i have to get all the water and ice (i didn't see any ice) out. and then i don't know what to do after that

and i don't live in the same city as my bf!

^ YES THANK YOU! and paerabol for helping. it looks like there WAS ice buildup and it just melted. there's a LITTLE still left in the very back. so i'm unscrewing it now and getting it out.

FLOODING AGAINNNNNNNNN/DEFROSTING WHEN IT ISN'T SUPPOSED TO

i'm not even dealing with it though. since my freezer is still pretty cold, like the fridge SHOULD be, but not cold enough to freeze shit, I just moved all my stuff up there for now (I didn't have much food anyway)

and i'm just not dealing with it. i'm calling an appliance man tomorrow. my dad said he would help me pay to fix it (thank god).
