In all seriousness, thanks to anyone who voted for me when I won Student Body Public Defender...but it only took about two days into the job to realize that its not just a joke to everyone on the outside, but its pretty much a joke to everyone on the inside too.

you have jackass frat boys trying to leave legacies (Bobby Mills comes to mind), pompous assholes who don't care about the university but want to be "real" politicians, the african-americans who are just trying to spread black power, and then the misfits who sit in the back a joke around about the other categories.

there are a few good eggs who really care, TGD included, but most of them can't keep their mouths shut when they should, so others start holding grudges against them and nothing ever gets accomplished.

9 out of every 10 bills the senate debates only effect the senate and not the student body. it is a body that does nothing but govern itself, and then distributes money to other organizations (UAB, IRC) that actually do shit, and then just stamp the big 'ol Student Government sponsorship tag on every event anyway, just so there is some false sense of purpose and authority. The SBP and Treasurer are the only positions that mean anything, the rest of SG needs to be liquidated.

Everyone's in here talking shit about student government now, but I seem to remember a couple of years ago I got a pretty big movement going involving this website to shut down the candidacy of one Jon Chichwak.

In fact, just last week a guy from this site I had never met came up to me and mentioned that incident.

And a year before that, I spearheaded an effort on this site to get people interested so we could see video of one of the candidate's sister revealing her breasts on video. It's really what started "FDT" as a thing.

That was kind of my point here... I wasn't trying to start some big "Support SG" movement. I'm just as unhappy about SG as the rest of you are. I just felt like after the whole Talley renovation bullshit that maybe rallying behind a candidate that ISN'T trying to pass big money-spending bills to make his resume look better would be a good idea. But I don't even know who's running.. Except some guy named Matt Gromlich. He's got all the support of Ceresnak, which means I won't be voting for him.

^actually, that's the one thing SG has done recently where I was in full support. Talley is the worst fucking piece of shit sorry excuse for a student center in the whole state, and I've been to just about every campus in the UNC system. NC Central has a better student center than we do. I wish they had pushed it years sooner so it would have been cheaper, but the longer you wait the more expensive it gets. Now we're in an economical state where no one is willing to put out extra $$$, so it might never happen.

Besides, SG had nothing to do with Talley renovations. Their poll of the student body and "recommendation" to the board of trustees/governors meant nothing, because ultimately the decision is made by a group of 80 year old men who don't give a shit about what SG or the student body have to say.

I remember Melissa Price (who I had a few classes with) was always trying to improve student health services, which at the time was just horrible in many ways, and her work was one area of student gov I respected. I haven't used the health services in a while though, having worked full time for a couple of years after undergrad, and since being back in grad school at State I haven't needed their services yet.

Sara Yasin and Tony Caravano are a few other people I knew or had met from student government. I met Sara at a candle light vigil. Melissa came to my wedding reception, but I haven't heard from any of the others since undergrad really. Well except of course my husband who was also a part of student senate. His view, at least a few years ago, was that the Senate, rather than focusing on self-regulation & bickering, should focus on things it can do like advocate for student rights towards the administration & community (which is kind of in the realm that Melissa was advocating), and if it can't do that then it might as well be disbanded.

A few Student Government officials either take it way too seriously, and most not nearly seriously enough, with the result that the student body has no reason to either. I did student gov in high school and it was kind of fun, and we spent most of our time organizing fun school events rather than anything else. The administration wouldn't let us do a car bashing fundraiser (donate a dollar, take a swing with a sledgehammer or bat, dent or destroy part of a junk car on school property). In hindsight I can understand the liability argument much better, but at least we had school spirit

So here's the thing about that...no matter how we the student population voted, the Talley thing was going to happen. Ditto for how SG voted.

Maybe it needs to be fixed. But certainly, if we're going to fix it, it needs to be paid for by the people who will actually get to use it. The way things are now, most of the people shelling out (substantial) sums of money to renovate Talley and the Atrium won't be around when it gets finished.

That's why I voted against it. As things were laid out in the referendum (and, to the best of my knowledge, the way they still are), my fees are going to go up a coupla hundred bucks and the project will be done months after I'm gone. I love NC State and all but I'm already giving them money hand over fist for grad school and I'm not exactly made of the stuff to begin with. If they want a baller-ass student center, they can take out a loan or some shit to build it now and charge the people who will enjoy it to pay the thing off later.

Regardless whether or not the NCSU Admins would've pushed the Talley bill through anyway, the role of SG is to ultimately represent the students. So sure, the 80 year olds were probably going to do it anyway.. but there's nothing more blatantly offensive to some 30,000+ students than when your supposed "leaders" tell you your vote is shit to them & they'll vote how they want anyway. I don't know if any of you saw the Technician in the following weeks but there was an article that reported some figures. This year's fee referendum brought in around 5,000-6,000 voters, as opposed to a mere 1700/1750 voters the year before.

I agree. Talley's an eyesore. It's old, out-dated. I get it. I'm all for a new student center. But not during an economic crisis. That's foolish. So we've passed it right? And The Atrium was included in that, correct? .... funny. The Atrium was supposed to be done for the start of the Fall semester. Now it's PROJECTED for 2011. Much like Talley was proposed for 2014 (I believe) and I'd be really surprised if it actually met it's deadline.

I'm in big favor of the Talley renovations simply because of how ugly Talley is now and how much Talley and the Atrium being redesigned could bring to the overall look of the campus. I'm a Freshman and I likely won't even be able to see either of these things when they're fully completed. I'm happy they're pushing ahead with it, but telling the student's that their vote didn't matter was bullshit. And yes, I'm very, very sick of the HOWL emails.

Hahaha. I'm running for Student Body President and I wanted to just say everyone in this thread has a refreshing perspective of SG. I'm definitely not a straight, white, frat guy who is concerned about making connections for a future career in politics. Every time we enter "campaign" season candidates speak about only three issues: textbooks, tuition, and a popular issue (Talley). I wanted to ask people what other issues affect them because we really are missing the mark on advocating for students.

Seriously? I'm totally going to google this. I think its important to speak about good work being done for students but I truly feel that students are disappointed that candidates are not making the effort to engage our campus to feel connected to our leadership.
