My aftercare instructions say to change the gauze when I get home; repeat if necessary. I'm already on the third gauze wad and still bleeding a good amount; I soaked through the second wad in well under the 15 minute time period indicated for waiting.

I'd call to ask but talking disturbs the gauze and I'm sure that doesn't exactly help with clotting

(I've got stellar platelet counts, so you'd think I'd clot sooner than expected)


I guess this is mostly at those of you who've had wisdom teeth extracted, as this was a molar.

apply pressure, dont change the gauze, just keep adding fresh gauze on top of the bloody gauze

every time you remove the gauze you dislodge any clot that is forming.

I had all 4 wisdom teeth cut out of my mouth (teeth were still below the gum line) and they bled off and on for a week if I recall correctly (was over 10 yrs ago).


Not sure if this is the same thing.

That's pretty much what I thought, but they said to change it.

My though on that was that the gauze has to come out eventually, and you don't want an entire clot connected to the gauze that's got to go.

those instructions might have been given with the assumption that a good clot had already formed.

One had not formed and is now actively bleeding.........it has changed the ballgame a bit.

is the blood oozing, running at a steady rate or spurting/pulsatile?

do you have any stitches? If its still bleeding pretty hard after you've held good firm pressure for a while, call them back -- they might need to throw a stitch or two in there

I can't check. As of ~10 minutes ago, it was more than oozing, but less than flowing.

ive had to hold pressure on an artery for an hour before in order to get it to stop bleeding

it soaked through a small stack of 4x4 gauze


they were fine...... transfusion not needed

When I was 14 I had mine cut out. All four were impacted below the gum line. When I came home I just held my mouth open over the sink and let blood flow out until it slowed down. Shit sucked, good luck with it lol
