Not anymore

Quote :
"GARNER -- ConAgra Foods plans to close its Garner Slim Jim factory by next year, laying off hundreds and dealing another blow to the region's economy.

The decision announced Wednesday means that the world's supply of Slim Jims, which came from a factory on Jones Sausage Road for more than 40 years, will no longer be locally made.

This kid I knew at Enloe had a Dad that was a bigshot at the plant. He always had a backpack full of Slim Jims, and even got Macho Man to come out to the school. That was one muscular midget.

"State and local officials offered Con Agra as much $2.2 million to keep its Slim Jim factory open in Garner, even though they knew the company was planning to cut its work force there nearly in half.

N.C. Commerce Department officials were even willing to ease restrictions on some incentives to provide grant money despite further layoffs, according to e-mail messages and other documents released by Commerce.

"I think five to 10 years from now, we'll look back and say we're better off," Beasley said.

"My goal is to create 440 jobs or more back on that property," he added. "Anything I can replace over 230 would be a plus. Eighteen months from now, we wereonly going to have 230 anyway.

I understand the advantages of using tax incentives...but I don't know how I feel about using them just to keep a couple hundred low wage jobs around. That kind of business is so easy to move that every few years they can realistically evaluate laying everyone off and moving to another area/state to save money. When that happens the state never really recoops on its investment.

Give the incentives out to companies that are going to have a hard time uprooting employees once they get here. I'd like to see a company with 200+ software developers try to lay everyone off and move to another state. Not to say its impossible, but its a whole hell of a lot more expensive.

There's no way we could have competed with what Ohio was offering anyway.
