who has been photographed with a guitar

by whether that guitar is acoustic or electric

and/or the model of said guitar (especially if it's the former)

for example

a guy holding a late model epiphone acoustic is not a serious musician

but he's also not a douchebag who learns how to play five radio hits to help pull tail

Well, the owner of the guitar is a serious musician. I am not, but I play an old alvarez.

But if we're just going by photographs, and not actual ownership, then you are right.

Now answer my question in the guitar thread.

So, basically, if you're not playing a high quality guitar, chances are you're not a serious musician?

FUCKING DUH, MAN.

I play a no name acoustic guitar I got for fifty dollar bucks. Tell me about myself.

this is the thing

a late model epiphone IS a quality guitar

it's just not a professional instrument

most serious musicians have acquired a professional instrument or two at some point

be it a brand new prs or a les paul junior from the '50s

the reason this doesn't necessarily apply to people with electrics

is that a good amp can make even the worst electric guitar sound good

so the guitar really doesn't say anything other than possibly indicating musical style by way of pickup selection and scale length

I disagree with this notion. I've heard some shit guitars played through some boutique amps. They still sound pretty terrible.

just because it's a boutique amp doesn't mean it's a good amp

and no, a teisco isn't going to sound as good as a junior through a good amp

but if it's a plank that'll stay in tune with a pickup on it, it'll make a serviceable noise

which is more than you can say for some cheapie acoustics

the only acoustics i've got are a '66 gibson lg-1 that i kinda don't want any more

and a seagull sm6 that i've had for almost 15 years

it has a huge crack in the top that's opening into a hole and it still sounds lovely

i'll have to admit that jackson is pretty gangster

SD blackouts AHB-1/AHB-2 on neck/bridge and the afterburner on the latter wired to a switch
18-volt mod
floyd rose bridge/nut
tuned to A# with 14-68 (baritone bass) strings
and of course gloss black beveled cutaway with the old-school upturned headstock

it's a freaking monstrosity

it'll be hanging on my wall, plugged into nothing, and i swear to god it'll feed back when i cut on a lamp or something

And I am making generalizations about people and the relationship they have with music based on the things that they own!

(I will admit that I agree with this thread a vast majority of the time. There are exceptions, though. One of the best guitarists I know plays a $200 Ibanez that he's completely set up. He does have it running through a Dual Rec, though.)

so, we're non-players that respect the craft of a loved one

Tell me about me:

My main guitar is a Gibson Firebird V ('91 reissue, tobacco sunburst)

I also have a purple Stratocaster (Mexican Standard) and a Gretsch Corvette (red, 1960s era--not sure of the exact year)

I have one acoustic, a Fender single-cutaway electro-acoustic. Don't remember the model #...it's a mid-range model...prob on the lower side of mid-range, but for the money, I think it sounds and plays really well (and I don't mind carting it around to 3rd-world combat zones)

for amps, I have a Peavey Triumph (60w combo...I'd like to sell it), and a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. I want to get my buddy to wire up something EL84 based (probably single-ended class-A, and I'd build a cabinet for it), just to have something different from my go-to Fender amp. Oh, and I have a little Acoustic amp for my Fender acoustic.

For effects, I have a Russian-made Big Muff and a Digitech effects board, but 99% of the time, I play either straight into the amp, or with just my Vox wah.

I love it, it has as a great blues and dirty jazz tone. but I wish it had reverb and the speaker is lacking in bottom end. sometimes for grins i'll run it into the clean channel of my big amp.

it was my first amp, so it also has a certain sentimental value to it.
