Both terms can only relate to special meat prepared in special rub and brine with special taste.

I think when "a" precedes the word barbecue or BBQ it refers to the act of cooking out regardless of the food served, however barbecue itself does not include anything other than

Homer: Look kids! I just got my party invitiations back from the
printers.
Lisa: [Reading the invitation.] "Come to Homer's BBBQ. The extra B is
for BYOBB."
Bart: What's that extra B for?
Homer: It's a typo.

Any variation of barbecue always involves a pig getting roasted, at least around these parts.

yeah, so i was of course playing the devil's advocate about this whole bbq thing.

bbq is clearly whole hog pork chopped or pulled with a light vinegar pepper sauce with no hint of tomato.

I've posted this before, but the only people I've heard say "we're barbecuing" and not be cooking a pig were from California. They were ignorant. I did not correct them in their ways because we had just smoked a huge ass blount. I also prefer saying barbacoa.

I'm reading a book by a half-Czech, half-Dutch Canadian who lived in California for a little while but has spent much of his life in the South Pacific, on far-flung isolated islands.

And even he mentions NC on two occasions:

1) Once in regard to our fanatical barbecue beliefs.
2) Once about the UNC/Duke rivalry.

Both of these were discussed to Chinese people in China.

Thought I'd share.

BBQ/barbecue IS NOT A VERB OR DESCRIPTION OF AN ACTIVITY.

Anyone who claims so should probably be arrested.

agreed...A 'cook out' is the phrase that fits that bill.

It is only acceptable to use BBQ as a noun, as in eastern style BBQ, or an adjective, as in BBQ chicken (chicken with BBQ sauce on it).

You are getting BBQ/barbecue twisted with grilling.

Grilling = hot and fast = burgers and steaks
BBQ = low and slow = ribs, brisket, and pork

There is room for both.

^^^^ Man, wish I could go to that

Many moons ago the company my dad worked for used to do an annual pig pickin' contest. Employees could get half a pig provided by the company and a cooker. Best pig won a big prize. Then they got bought out by another company from Europe and the pig pickin's stopped
