betsy is a cute name til you're 5 or 6

then it's acceptable once you're 60+

in the meantime, it's awkward

If I have two girls, they'll be named Niamh and Aoife. Two Celtic names - pronounced "Neeve" and "Eefa"

I'll give them standard middle names so that may go by those if they so choose. Niamh Elizabeth and Aoife Rose.

I find this very hard to believe, that it would be ranked even that high

I have known a girl named "Gordon" in my lifetime, but have never in all my born days met a Bertha

If the rank is in the 900's, then that means only a few (relatively) girls were named Bertha that year.

Click on that link and select 1985 and select the top 1000 names. You get a list... the top and bottom of which look like this:

Popularity in 1985
Rank Male name Number of
males Female name Number of
females
1 Michael 64,852 Jessica 48,342
2 Christopher 59,680 Ashley 46,988
3 Matthew 47,025 Jennifer 42,637
4 Joshua 42,176 Amanda 39,042
5 Daniel 38,503 Sarah 24,861
6 David 38,480 Stephanie 23,230
7 James 35,824 Nicole 22,955
8 Robert 32,061 Heather 21,151
9 John 31,469 Elizabeth 20,535
10 Joseph 30,187 Megan 20,012

Bertha is #955:

950	Cleveland	92	Cathryn	163
951 Denver 92 Eric 163
952 Eliseo 92 Karly 163
953 Irvin 92 Latanya 163
954 Kale 92 Mari 163
955 Kim 92 Bertha 162
956 Al 91 Corrine 162
957 Baby 91 Nicholas 162
958 Dandre 91 Nikita 162
959 Eloy 91 Ada 161

So only 162 girls born in 1985 were named Bertha in the US. And if you select percentages on the page, you see that it is 0.0088% of all female births that year.

That's why you have never met a Bertha.

I guess there are just a lot fewer names out there than I originally assumed

come to think of it, I'd have a hard fucking time coming up with 954 female names

I was going to say that above.

I mean, you (or most people) could come up with maybe 100 female names, or 200 at the most. And after that you would draw a blank. So now think how few women there must be whose name is ranked in the 900s in popularity.

I know my name in the US is not ranked very high but I bet if you take a look at countries with large Muslim populations, my name is probably in the top 25.

It can be influenced by region as well. When I was a kid I knew a couple Margots in my classes but when we moved to NC I never heard the name again.
