ok so tuesday three other girls and i are giving a presentation to first graders about nutrition.

my part-i have to show how much sugar is in certain foods.
ive googled and so far i only have

1. box of froot loops
2. 20 oz sunkist
3. lunchables

now i want to find foods that have a lot so the kids will be entertained.
i need a little wow factor.
keep in mind that 1 cup of sugar is roughly 200 grams.

this isn't so much about trying to figure out how much is in it...i look at the nutrition label.
im having a hard time finding things that kids normally eat

ie i can't be like a starbucks white mocha has ##grams and thats the same amount as 20 cookies!

you think yall can help me out?

Tell the kids why they like high sugar and high fat (caveman explanation) but then tell them they need to play hard like cavemen or they going to get fat (seinfeld-"not that there's anything wrong with that"). 30% of ur diet needs to be fat or u can't even digest your vitamins, but don't tell the kids that. Tell them, if ur healthy, ur body can easily adjust to any diet so to just not worry about it. At that age they can't control their diet, it's the parents that make those decisions. They DO control their play behavior tho. Strategically, I'd tell them they need to play hard like Cavemen because that's what they really are hormonally.

use a tub of Duncan Hines cake icing (don't kid yourself, kids eat that) and for the ones that aren't that hard, it will be funny. kids aren't going to be impressed by data, they need charisma.

The kids aren’t going to remember anything… they’re going to be sitting there the whole time wondering why you aren’t giving them cookies, soda, or the lunchables to eat.

we did an "experiment" in the 4th grade with junk food

we took popular crap food, like chips, cookies, etc, and put a serving's worth (according to the package) of them on brown paper towels for something like 1-2 minutes to see how much grease and oil they had in them

then we'd mark the napkins for each item and look at the package to see what the nutrition facts were

the more grease/oil, the more saturated fat, of course the more stained the napkin was

and obviously the more stained the napkin is, the worse the food is for you

that whole process really stuck with me, obviously

I would also think looking at cereals or pop tarts are a good thing. Also, as far as carbs are concerned, pizza can jack my sugar up like no one's biness so maybe that is another option. I hope I read your OP correctly.

When I teach nutrition in my classes, I pass out fast food menus and have the kids pick out a meal that they would typically pick.

I have the kids write their menu choices on a paper plate and then measure out crisco to represent the grams of fat in each item.

Hey - I teach this stuff everyday to high schoolers (who are basically 7 year olds in bigger bodies)
Anyhow, I came up with a portion sizes kit similar to this one - http://www.enasco.com/product/WA20511G
I let them pass around the cd and the baseball and tennis ball and teach them about how a little "bad" food is okay but to use MODERATION and BALANCE and VARIETY.

I also use a bottle of soda that is empty and I measure out how much is actually sugar in gatorade and mountain dew.

You can also do a little taste test of kool aid made with sugar and crystal lite (which has no sugar) and you can ask who can identify which one is the sugar and which one isn't.

Wish I would have seen this earlier. oops.

They're first graders, you don't need facts. Just say there's five pounds of sugar in box of chips ahoy and they'll believe it. 10 seconds later they'll forget it to make room for Pokemons in those tiny little brains. I need to throw in an OMGoogle.
