Quote :
"that i moved to north carolina was a surprise.

i’m a reasonably cautious person

so the fact that i packed up my life and moved to a state where i knew not a single soul

is slightly out of character.

but i think the fact that i was 23 helped.

now, almost four years since i left chapel hill, i think the springs are the hardest time not to be there.

i miss north carolina in the spring most of all.

i visited UNC in the spring.

when i called the school to set up a tour guide and such, miss betty answered the phone.

you’ve never heard an accent like miss betty’s.

she asked me if i was a “yankee.”

i said, not really.

she asked if i’d been down that way before.

i said i’d driven through, and stopped for lunch once in asheville.

she said “oh, dear” with her voice dripping in honey “you are a lucky young lady, you will be here when the whole town will be full blooming. you’ve never seen anything like spring in chapel hill.”

and she was right.

it was downright intoxicating.

a thunderstorm passed through the one night i spent in the state before i moved there.

i was staying in a little motel on 15-501.

the next morning, as i caught a ride to RDU, the sky was exactly blue. spring blue and cloudless and clear and every tree and plant and vine in the vicinity was stretched in bloom.

that was the spring of 2003. seven years later, i can remember how that one day in chapel hill won me over. how the place made me swoon. "

I was in Boston this weekend, where I talked to an older gentleman sitting in a near-empty bar next to me. And at one point he said, "Chapel Hill, NC? That place is a hotbed of right-wing extremism."

And he was being serious.
