My friend, the hypochondriac, claims shes allergic to garlic, among many other things. However, she conveniently is only allergic to garlic when we go to eat somewhere she doesn't want to eat (ie italian restaurants). Any other time, she pours all sorts of garlicy spices in her food.

I'm currently growing about 85 plants of 5 different gourmet kinds of garlic.

Pretty excited to see the results in a month or two.

i am a hypochondriac but i stay away from allergies. esp food allergies. i love food too much. even if i was allergic to a food i'd probably blame some weird disease before an allergy. mmmm foood

People who say "I'm allergic to" in place of "I don't like" anger me greatly.

Nah, not at all. They're real similar to onions actually.

I ordered a sampler pack of the best garlics to grow in our region off of gourmet garlic gardens and planted them in the beginning of October. You just break the bulbs up, soak them in water overnight, and then dip them in rubbing alcohol right before you put them in the ground. If I get time I'll get some pics in the near future.

This is going to be a dumb question but after you plant them what happens? I know they grow green stalks but does the clove become a big bulb?

They stayed pretty dormant initially, and have grown a lot in the past 3 months or so. Each one of the leaves is actually a wrapper around the bulb so you get a pretty good idea of what is happening underneath the soil.

Eventually, they send up a scape. If you cut the scape before it fully forms the bulb will get bigger, but if you leave it the garlic will store longer. I'm waiting on mine to develop the scape right now and will definitely be cutting it off the plants.

Ehh...My husband hates mayo--like strong aversion hate towards it. He ALWAYS said "no mayo" and would still get mayo on his sandwich. One day I said "just tell em you're allergic" and FINALLY servers listened and made a big note so the cook wouldn't put mayo on his order.

I mean...sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

But to the OP--being allergic to garlic would be terrible.

^yeah I have also found that if I don't want something on my food then it's better to say I'm allergic to it because they are more likely to actually write it down than think they will just remember it and end up forgetting it

I'd say I hate mayo as well, however if my food shows up with some mayo I'll probably still eat it.

Mayonnaise is hardly a reason to start inventing new medical conditions.

this is true- I once threw an unopened packet of mayo at him (which he thought had been opened) and he wanted to fight me over over... and he never wants to fight

I just stare at the waitress and yell "God help you if I find mayo on my sandwich". That way the worst thing I end up with is spit.

"Garlic extract in toothpaste or mouthwash may stop the initiation of cavities, reports researchers from Iran. Would you use it?
The great majority of cavities (proper term: carious lesions) are initiated (started) by one and only one species of bacteria: streptococcus mutans, otherwise known as strep mutans, or s. mutans. The researchers used the very hardiest strains they could find, multi-drug resistant s. mutans. These bugs can't even be killed with most common antibiotics, or even our prescription anti-bacterial mouthwash, chlorhexidine.

What they found was that garlic extract, at least in vitro (test in petri dishes), had a germ inhibiting effect several hundred times stronger than any other drug. In other words, garlic extract kills bacteria that antibiotics can't.

Their suggestion is that we try putting garlic extract in toothpastes or mouthwashes in order to fight cavities. "

My wife is highly allergic to garlic. It sucks...we never get to eat at Amedeos, Pizza or Cheesecake Factory (everything is premade with garlic).

You learn to deal with it...but I do miss it. When she is gone for the weekend, I always go garlic crazy.

I'd probably just off myself if I couldn't eat garlic. Just eat a shitload of it and die that way.

I planted 11 garlic bulbs last November and they are starting to grow shoots. Can't wait to see what happens!
