They had at least 1 tornado in Gaston County tonight, just about 15 minutes down the road from my place. Those were some rough storms.

Tornado was near Crowders mountain.

There was also another tornado like 9 miles northwest of charlotte.

In southwest charlotte the most we got was... something slightly smaller than dime sized hail and a bit of thunder

that's the whole reason i'm awake it was like a camera flash went off in my face - that's how bright the lightning was. (in cary, off Seabrook) it was bright enough to wake me up. and then the thunder was seriously the loudest i've ever heard. of course we had the window open but DAMN

god damnit, if i go back to sleep i'll never wanna get outta bed to go to work in 2hrs

i should just go now

blah

^I've had lightning hit my house 5 feet from where I stood. The house did not shake. It was the most awesome experience I've ever had. The static build up just before... the intense flash of light... it was incredible.

did you hear thunder at all?

ive read somewhere that if you are directly underneath a lightning strike, then you wouldnt hear thunder. im not sure what kind of physics are involved in that, and i also wonder how true that is

yes. it was loud, but I'd heard louder that was likely 1-2 miles away.

it's weird though because it felt like time slowed down as it was striking. idk it was adrenaline or something but the light seemed like it stayed in the room I was in for like 10 seconds (lightning hit the house at the satellite that was a couple feet to the right and a few feet in the air from where I was standing near a window). Felt like a full 5 before I heard it.

I know it came in because it fried the both the satellite receivers, a router, and 3 computers.

if I could be like 5 feet from being struck again without thousands of dollars of equipment being fried again, I would definitely put myself there again.

I too woke up from this thunder just before 3:45 am. I live in Cary and just the sheer roar and shaking my first thought when I was startled awake was oh shit tornado get the fuck up! Then after the place stopped shaking I went back to sleep.

I came very close to being hit on a golf course once...it struck about 10 feet away from the golf cart. It was crazy, and somehow drained the golf cart too.

The 2nd one you mentioned was up around the Belmont/Mt. Holly area. That's the one I was talking about (not that Crowders Mountain is that far away either).
