i think a lot of people just misuse the word allergic. they really just have sensitivities. that said, i am allergic to bananas, kiwi, strawberry, watermelon, honey dew, cantaloupe, tomatoes...any fruit with small seeds (or small relative to its size, like the melons). this doesn't stop me from eating them, except for watermelon and honey dew. of course, i don't like those 2 and i still eat the others regularly, so it's probably just that i don't eat them as often.

food allergies are real.the reason most developed countries have them is because our IgE (and mast cells/esinophils) are normally used to get rid of worms and parasites. since we don't really have those, that portion of the immune system has "nothing to do". (lack of better term)so it develops allergies towards things that are recognized as foreign but not dangerous.we are in the middle of learning this shit right now

I'm allergic to something in Bud Light. I can have three of them and have a splitting headache the next day. I have several friends that have the same problem. Maybe some preservative?

Haha I used t o know a guy who claimed he was allergic to alcohol. I told him he was just a bitch

There are children who are genuinely allergic to types of foods, but some just have intolerances which I think are different. For instance, a dairy allergy vs. Lactose intolerance. But I could be wrong. Joie?
3/30/2010 10:06:13 AM
^yes. there differences between intolerance and allergies. same basis though. if im not mistaken.

I know some people have gastrointestinal issues, esp with dairy and wheat products, so parents will limit or cut those out of the child's diet. But also with all this crap about organic and natural foods parents are going crazy trying to find an alternative to everything, when in my opinion that's a bit unnecessary

Am I allergic to carrots? Whenever I eat large carrots, I start to sneeze as I'm chewing them up and I end up shooting bits of carrot all over the place. Usually 1-2 sneezes only and I'm able to chomp down 2-3 large carrots, seems to happen more often than not.

A lot of people seem to be allergic to things only when they are in meals they don't want to eat
3/30/2010 10:21:18 AM
in middle school, I was allergic to homework
3/30/2010 10:24:45 AM
oh yeah, carrots was another thing on my list. i don't know how they fit. if they're cooked i get no reaction. i still eat them either way.
3/30/2010 10:39:07 AM
I wasn't referring to allergens specifically but just to the fad diets every parent I know seems to be trying
3/30/2010 10:41:12 AM
an anaphylactic reaction to nuts aint no myth. dat shit is serious businessotoh, people who say "mehhhh i'm allergic to ____" when they mean "i don't like the taste of _____"whatever morons
3/30/2010 10:53:25 AM
In my time working in restaurant kitchens, I have heard it all when it comes to allergies. Actually had someone try to say that they were allergic to SALT. Is that shit even possible? Maybe a sensitivity to iodine? But that shit is essential to life as well.
3/30/2010 11:02:29 AM
A guy I went to the beach with this past weekend said he is allergic to most fruits. That just doesn't seem possible
3/30/2010 11:06:25 AM
i actually had a friend in HS that would have allergic reactions if she ate red meat. it was weird.
3/30/2010 11:07:13 AM
I drank a half gallon of milk (whole milk) last thursday before going to a friends house. I woke up in the middle of the night (2:30AM to be exact). I dont know if that counts as an allergy but all I can remember hearing as I left was "dont mess up your pretty car". It was not one of my finer moments but was one of the more memorable. ahahahahahahah

I've heard the increase of food allergies can be tied to children living on antibiotics when they are younger. They have parents that go to the doctor for every cold they have and doctors that will write a script for antibiotics any chance they get.Because their immune system isn't forced to fight off actually bad things it ends up fighting off things that aren't bad.I've also heard what Joie said...I heard that allergies are ways to fight off the parasites that people in other 3rd world countries have, but since we don't have them here are immune system fights other things. So I guess both things are true. That being sad...this past summer when we should have campers come with gallon sized bags of medicines and paragraphs of allergies they had I felt so bad for them. We had twins come in that had to have their mom bring them every meal because they were allergic to just about everything.I know that when I have kids I will not be living at the doctors office. But allergies are not a myth...I've had to stab a kid with an epi pen after they were stung by a bee...it's not fun[Edited on March 30, 2010 at 11:49 AM. Apparently now parents are advised to withhold certain foods, like cow milk, oranges, peanuts, etc. from kids until they reach various ages because if they are exposed to them too young they're more likely to develop allergies. I had never heard of that until my sister-in-law was listing the things my niece couldn't eat yet. Was that recommended even like 10 years ago? I'd be interested to see how much data backs it up.
3/30/2010 11:55:09 AM
Yeah I get a kick out of all these things that are harmful to kids now, apparently all the kids before them were just super human or something.

I had dinner with my dad last weekend at Crazy Fire Mongolian Grill. We were almost done, when this guy comes up to us and says "Hey, did ya'll have seafood? Cuz our food was right next to yours on the grill, and ya'll must have had seafood cuz my eyes are itching and I'm having a reaction."We didn't have seafood.I was like, "Dude, you came to a place like this with a food allergy? You deserve itchy eyes. Get up out my face."]
3/30/2010 12:43:54 PM
My face swells up when I drink Fresca. I turn into the Elephant man. First time it happened, I called it a fluke. When it happened after a second try, I consider it an allergy. :-(
