Capsizing is EXACTLY what over-populated islands do... all the damn time, there's just too many people on the things.

I give mad credit to the Admiral "Uh, we don't anticipate that to a be a problem" is a much more appropriate response than one I would have given.

I hadn't read the video description till now... but....

This man is an actual elected congressman, and he seems to genuinely believe that islands are like boats made of land.

Perhaps we should scrap the 17th Amendment.
The framers of the Constitution may have had it right in the first place with Article I, section 3, "The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each state, chosen by the legislature thereof for six Years;"

Yea for Democracy!! It's infallible!

[Edited on April 2, 2010 at 9:31 AM. Reason : ^why did I believe you? I was wondering why I hadn't heard of this guy....]

he's a house member^^^^

this is my old committee and this district just cannot catch a break. (it's kind of similar to NC-12). ever since it was created they've had just abhorrent representation. to wit: cynthia mckinney, denise majette, and mr. johnson.

i remember when he first came to DC, i saw him in the grocery store in a bright purple velor track suit that would have made george costanza and zapp brannigan envious.

^^Obviously not, since the population of islands is just now getting high enough to cause problems.

i like to think this is a case where he was trying to either use capsize in a metaphorical sense, or was looking for a different word and that one accidentally came out. i mean the guy somehow got a law degree, but that doesnt save him from saying dumb things. either way, not helpful for the fall, although as lunak pointed out, there are plenty of members who are stupid as shit in both chambers. especially with all the appointees in the Senate right now.

^^^ DINOSAURS ARE HEAVIER THAN PPL SON. WHY DIDN'T THE DINOSAURS CAPSIZE THE GOD FORSAKEN ISLANDS? WHAT ABOUT PANGAEA SON? WHY DIDN'T PANGAEA CAPSIZE SON? THERE WAS SOME KIND OF HEAVY ASS SHIT LIVING ON THAT SHIT SON.

^^ You're giving that idiot a lot of credit. He can't even find the word "narrow" in that extremely limited vocabulary of his. You'd think as someone who does a lot of speaking for a living that he might, you know, ACTUALLY BE ABLE TO FUCKING SPEAK.

^Guam is a small island. This point was stressed for half the video. Pangea, on the other hand, was large. Crucial differences, there.

I'd like to believe this was an attempt at humor, meaning the island would be very overcrowded.

His exact wording "tip over and capsize" along with the hand gesture he makes leads me to believe otherwise

Are you fucking seriously unable to grasp the blatant sarcasm in my post? Dinosaur weight causing an island to capsize? Pangaea, a supercontinent, capsizing? Fuck you for even entertaining the idea that this was a serious post, in chit chat of all places. Christ you're fucking dense.

"I wasn’t suggesting that the island of Guam would literally tip over... I was using a metaphor to say that with the addition of 8,000 Marines and their dependents —an additional 80,000 people during peak construction on the tiny island with a population of 180,000 — could be a tipping point which could adversely affect the island’s fragile ecosystem and could overburden its stressed infrastructure. Having traveled to Guam last year, I saw firsthand how this beautiful — but vulnerable island — could easily become overburdened, and I was simply voicing my concerns —albeit with a dry sense of humor — that the addition of that many people could tip the delicate balance and do permanent harm to Guam."

Exactly, somebody pointed this out and he turns around and claims it was a metaphor. You don't need a metaphor to explain your point and mentioning "concern" about the island "capsizing" combined with his clear "capsize gesturing" (And the fact that he can't even find the word "narrow" in his, ironically, NARROW vocabulary) hardly makes for a good metaphor. He was serious at the time.

Saw this last night.

Hilarious.

But not that big of a deal.

Like, I tried to interpret it in a way that I could call him stupid and incompetent and get upset about the future of our country, but it's just this one dumb misconception.

I look forward to hearing more from this man though.

You shouldn't be frightened.

It's one dumb misconception.

If you are truly frightened, I hope you're on the hunt for more evidence that this guy is incompetent and dangerous, and I trust you're leading the campaign against him.

I guess it doesn't concern me as much because the article I read also listed a bunch of other dumb shit that's been said by politicians over the years. Not understanding islands isn't that big of a deal.

Not understanding how islands work isn't exactly under the same umbrella as something like not understanding how a nuclear reactor works. This man has no business making policy about a place that he thinks is magically floating in the ocean. WHAT IF A TSUNAMI MOVES IT AND WE CAN'T FIND IT? WHAT THEN ADMIRAL??! WHAT THEN?
