"What do you tutor? How many clients do you have?"

Any and all quantitative (and bio and physics) subjects (math/stats/decision making/GMAT/GRE/quantitative business/physics/biology/science etc).

Currently I have 2 regular students (one is preparing for the GMAT, and the other is doing a Master's in Project Management from GWU, DC via distance learning). And there there 3-4 semi-regulars who hit me up when they need help before tests and exams, about once a month. And then I get random calls from mothers and fathers throughout the year to help their kids for a week or two for specific exams, or HS/college students who are studying abroad in Europe/NA and are home for Christmas/Easter. Most of my clients in the past 6 years since I started have been middle and high school students, however, lately I have been getting many requests from undergrad and grad students.

Today was fabulous because I did 8 hours (2 students; 1 for 7 hrs!!! ) of tutoring today (weekend today).

I just checked my records: I averaged

18 hrs/month in 2007
25 hrs/month in 2008
18 hrs/month in 2009

(note: average is not out of 12 months, but months when I tutored, usual range 8 to 10 months/year)

I don't have electronic records before that, but I probably averaged 25-35 hrs/month in 2006 and 2005, closer to the upper end.

However, 2010 so far has been insane; 45 hrs/month so far since Jan! I don't like being out of the house so much as I have a full time job as well, but the money is good, and I hate to turn people down.

And so I have been thinking of quitting my job and going full time with tutoring... should I do it???

Advantages:
1-- money (4 hrs/day, 5 days/wk = 2X my salary = $4,500/month... easily rising to $6-7K/month in December and May) (of course, it is in my hands, so I could do more than 20 hrs/week and make $5-6K/month)
2-- far more satisfying than being a college lecturer
3-- NO MARKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
4-- wifey can quit her job if she wants since I will be making enough

Disadvantages:
1-- won't see my family much during the week as tutoring will be done between 4 pm and 10 pm
2-- when i go back to a proper full time job with a university after a couple of years, they would see no official work in an educational institution for 2 years... which would count against me and will make it harder to get a job... anybody know of anybody who went back to work in academia after a break?
3-- loss of benefits such as medical insurance (for family) and plane tickets (for family)... not a big deal as the total monetary value of those benefits per year at my current job is just ~$2,500, which I can earn in 2 weeks from tutoring
4-- could get boring if done for extended periods of time, since I will be seeing only a few faces

OPINIONS PLEASE! Thanks!

My GMAT student is taking his GMAT tomorrow.

Total bill = $1,493

However, he said that if he is accepted by the university he has applied to (in Spain), he will give me $2,667

DO WELL TOMORROW, DUDE!!!

BTW, he is either the nephew or grand-nephew of this guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khashoggi (you definitely want to read that page, esp if you are into conspiracy theories, international relations, business and politics....)

And here are 2 very interesting article about him:

Did Adnan Khashoggi Throw the Election to Dubya?
http://www.slate.com/id/1006609/

More "Six Degrees of Adnan Khashoggi"
http://www.slate.com/id/1007141/

Quote :
"But the Journal's tidbit does provide an occasion to play one of Chatterbox's favorite games, "Six Degrees of Adnan Khashoggi," in which the shadowy international arms merchant is connected to every scandal of the past 40 years and some that occurred even earlier. "Six Degrees of Adnan Khashoggi" is a slightly misleading name for this parlor game because in Khashoggi's case, it's rarely more than one or two degrees. Allow Chatterbox to demonstrate:

Bush's election
Clinton pardons (Marc Rich and Adolph "Al" Schwimmer)
Iran-Contra
Imelda Marcos' Shoe Collection
Wedtech
BCCI
The Death of Princess Di
The Gaudiness of Donald Trump
The Kennedy Assassination
Watergate
The Breakup of the Beatles
The Synfuels Fiasco
Charlie Chaplin's Seductions of Teen-Age Girls
Katharine Hepburn's Endorsement of Harris Wofford"

Click to read brief details of how he can be connected to at least one [bad] person involved in each of the scandals above.

I haven't lost anything on that condo... the tower is still under construction, unlike many where construction has stopped.

Perhaps it helps that mine ISN'T in Dubai?!

Sure, it has lost in [future] value some, but that doesn't matter to me right now because first of all, it doesn't exist yet, and second, even if it did, I am not about to sell it or anything. I am buying it to rent it out for 5-10 years and then maybe sell it (or live in it, who knows).
