I haven't kept up with any of this new tv technology nonsense so I need help. They want no bigger than 32", it will be in a small room (going to be pretty close to the tv), will be using directv, don't need anything fancy, price is a factor. I believe they currently still have a tube tv, so anything will be an upgrade.Halp tww

4/9/2010 7:07:40 PM
Dude, TV's are dirt cheap now if they're not a flat screen HD tv.
4/9/2010 7:08:13 PM
According to tww ads, circuit city dot com is having a mega sale. Ask tww and you shall receive.
4/9/2010 7:09:17 PM
It does need to be a flat screen tv
4/9/2010 7:10:31 PM
if they have really shitty vision you might want to get one of these http://www.gizmowatch.com/entry/rnib-s-talking-chipset-reads-tv-menu-for-the-blind/
4/9/2010 7:14:46 PM

4/9/2010 7:26:31 PM

4/9/2010 7:30:20 PM

I came in here just to make old people jokes
4/9/2010 8:03:26 PM
Get them a 20" HDTV Flat Screen...that's what I have in my room. I have a Toshiba...the best picture and best tv; also Visio is a great brand too. They're reasonable so just look around.
4/9/2010 8:56:31 PM
4/9/2010 9:37:37 PM
lololol samsung if you actually care about it being a good picture. visio though because it's cheap and your grandparents probably don't have good vision so they won't be able to appreciate the better tv anymore.

there was a good looking plasma floating classifieds that if I had the dough I would have been alllllll over. However if they won't part with the 32" barrier I'd get a nice Vizio LCD or Panasonic Plasma from Sams Club or Costco (the warranty alone is worth the cost of entry.)Both of those TV's have decent picture, great price, and include features (inherently or programmed) to keep maintenance to a minimum.Whatever you do you should pair your purchase up with a Logitech Harmony remote. No need for the $150 one, just one of the 4 device remotes will do. This way their system end-to-end can be operated with just a few buttons, particularly as cable companies are now requiring boxes to get the HD channels. Plus it keeps the real remotes safe and their hands away from 'input' and menu buttons.[Edited on April 9, 2010 at 10:02 PM. Reason : haha, I missed the Vizio posts, +1 me on that]

i need a new tv too and have recently been trying to research this shit. I plan on going with an LCD cause they seem to be more popular...and perhaps better? I have no idea, but the point is that I want to know which brands are considered the better ones....Vizio? LG? Sony? Sharp? Toshiba? Panasonic? ....? Which are definite no, no brands?
4/9/2010 10:05:21 PM
how they gonna give an upper limit ... some bullshit
4/9/2010 10:09:48 PM
^^you may want to redirect serious inquiries to tech talk. Just this week we've discussed 120hz, 60hz and 240hz technology, and how plasma is probably better than all of them. With 2-3 threads you'd get all the knowledge you'll need.As for brand it's personal preference. There's only a handful of panel manufacturer's and the rest are rebrands. I absolutely prefer plasma over anything LCD (unless I watch a lot of news and sports - then the fast refresh can help). Either way, ask in there so you don't get crapped on over here
4/9/2010 10:17:48 PM
yeah, probably a good idea...

Quick answers:If going to watch bluerays: get 120hz+ because they can do 24hz and 60hz cannot do 24hz (blueray's are typically 24hz)If you want to spend as little money as possible and get a decent tv: get a visioIf you want to spend good money and get a good tv: samsungIf you want to spend a shit ton of money and get a great tv: mitsubishilcd vs. plasma for n00bs mostly boils down to dark room vs. bright room. you don't wanna put a plasma in a bright room typically. ]

Check out Insignia in the 21" - 29" range. They make some damn good tv's.
4/9/2010 10:30:33 PM
^^yea... the 60"+ Mitzos and Sonys will make me droll from the parking lot at Costco [Edited on April 9, 2010 at 10:32 PM. Reason : ^]
4/9/2010 10:31:49 PM
^^don't do that. insignia FTMFL^the mitsubishi lazer tv is ftmfw
4/9/2010 10:32:54 PM
ah crap....I wasn't even thinking about that bluray shit. I plead total ignorance on that subject too....I was under the impression that only mattered for when you played one on a bluray player....fuck I don't know shit...I think I should get outta here
4/9/2010 10:33:56 PM
I walk in the door and think "Sweet Jesus" to that 70" one right at the door. And whats sad is I do it every single time.
4/9/2010 10:34:28 PM
http://www.otr.netGet them a Vizio 32". 720p should be fine.
4/9/2010 10:34:46 PM
i've never played a blueray on a 60hz tv (only on a 240hz sweet ass led tv ) but the blueray will skip frames or something like that if it's encoded in 24hz and you try to play it on something else.^for other people 720p is probably fine, but personally I wouldn't want anything less than 1080p. I also would never buy a visio myself, but would recommend it to those looking for cheap solutions. ]

My opinions from online research and look sets in stores. If you disagree with something, I'd like to know what & why in as few words, expletives, and flames as possible.Brands:If you want an inexpensive, yet not shit-brand TV, and don't care for great picture quality get a VizioIf you want good/OK quality for more money get Phillips, LG, Sanyo, Sony, ToshibaIf you want great quality get panny (plasma) or samsung (LCD)If you want to waste your money on shitty TVs then get: Insignia, Sanyo, Proscan, Viore, Element, RCA, Emerson, CurtisLCD Vs Plasma: (listing best TV)Viewing angle: PlasmaContrast/Black levels: tie (plasmas in dark rooms; LCDs in lighter rooms)Natural motion: PlasmaPower Consumption: LCDWeight: LCDSize: LCD (available in more sizes)Image retention/burn-in: LCD (don't really suffer from these issues)Life span: tieDurability: LCD (plasmas are more fragile)Screen Size:Screen ViewingSize Distance26" 3.25-5.5 feet32" 4.0-6.66 feet37" 4.63-7.71 feet40" 5.0-8.33 feet46" 5.75-9.5 feet52" 6.5-10.8 feet58" 7.25-12 feet65" 8.13-13.5 feet70" 8.75-14.75 feet1080 vs 720 & p or i:*p types are always better, but more expensiveDon't get 720 in TVs larger than 36-42"For those sizes and smaller it's a toss up: if you're not playing 1080 video games or watching blu-ray, 720 if fine. 60 vs 120120 looks better; but if you're not using blu-ray, 1080 gaming, or tons of action/sports, 60 is just fine.[Edited on April 10, 2010 at 12:16 PM. My grandparents JUST bought a 25" Zenith wooden console tv. That joint has s-video and a subwoofer in it! I'm not sure which surprised me more-that you can still buy wooden console tv sets or that Zenith is still in business.
