Quote :
"DURHAM -- A donkey in northern Durham County tested positive for rabies, Durham County Animal Control reported Monday.

Officials don't know how the donkey was exposed to the virus. They think it probably was infected by a rabid wild animal that passed through the donkey’s pasture.

This is not the first case of rabies in Durham County, but this is the first known case of rabies in a donkey in Durham County. The donkey marks the second case of rabies in Durham County in 2010. The first case was a skunk that tested positive in February.

This case marks the 205th case of rabies in Durham County since 1998. However, this number may not clearly reveal how many animals may actually have contracted the disease in Durham County, since testing is limited to specific circumstances. Animals are only accepted for testing at the North Carolina State Laboratory in Raleigh when knowing the results will determine medical treatment for humans or quarantine or euthanasia for exposed domestic animals in accordance with State law. Rabies cases in Durham County have included bats, cats, cattle, raccoons, foxes, skunk and now a donkey.

Durham County Animal Control officials advise that the greatest defense against rabies is for citizens to ensure that all dogs and cats four months of age, and older, are vaccinated and remain current. Rabies vaccinations are required by State law. Animals are vaccinated with one year vaccinations, and if they maintain a current history can be vaccinated with three year vaccines by a veterinarian.

Durham County Animal Control offers one year vaccinations at the Animal Control Office, located at 3005 Glenn Road. Vaccinations are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 12 p.m., and between the hours of 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

While State law does not mandate vaccination for livestock, many livestock species can contract the virus and in the State of North Carolina this has included cattle, goats and horses. Durham County Animal Control recommends consulting with a large animal veterinarian to have livestock vaccinated against the rabies virus.

For more information about rabies, citizens can contact Durham County Animal Control, at 919-560-0634.
