I finished in 2002, but here are the profs I had as a grad student:Shu C Fang: $180,000 (P Ind. Eng) (Distinguished and Titled) (up from $161,440 the previous year )John Bishir : $23,000 (P Math) (Distinguished and Titled)Salah Elmaghraby: $66,562 (P Operations Research) (Distinguished and Titled)Yahya Fathi: $122,082 (P Ind. Eng)Subhashis Ghoshal: $107,000 (AP Stat)Thom Hodgson: $186,694 (P Ind. Eng) (Distinguished and Titled)Jeffrey Joines: $88,079 (AP Textile Eng, Chem, Sci)William Stewart: $133,133 (P Comp Sci)Thomas Reiland: $81,500 (AP Stat)Charles Smith: $84,511 (AP Stat)Can someone explain Salah Elmaghraby, a Distinguished and Titled Professor in his 70s earns just $66,562, but Subhashis Ghosal, an Associate Professor in his 40s, earns $107,000?Perhaps Salah is retired and that's his retirement pay (pension)? But then how come John Bishir's (also a Distinguished and Titled Professor in his 70s) pension is just $23,000?

also research profs can make money on the side subcontracting to companies etc. (i think this is limited to some % of salary by university policy. maybe 50%?) i assume this isn't included in the news and observer number.

Surprised D. Brown only makes $60k. She's a good teacher and could probably get a LOT more than that in the corporate world. But I guess teaching Businesses classes isn't the most stressful thing in the world.
4/15/2010 8:41:19 AM
my adviser from grad school makes 113K and i know he does a fair amount of stuff on the side. but he's very well regarded in the ae community.
4/15/2010 8:43:03 AM
If the professor has received a grant for research he can also elect to supplement a portion of his salary from the grant. I think typically depending on the grant this can add a 10k-30k/yr bonus to one's salary. My professor receives $88,500/yr in salary. I wouldn't be surprised if he also received $10k/yr from the grant as well

Grant (Zoology): $139,453 (damn son)K. Sandberg (Chemistry): $67,000 (very underpaid if you ask me)R. Borski (Zoology): $113,283 (ugh.)J. After looking at a lot of the English professor salaries, it makes me kind of sad to see that I make more money than them.It seems as though it would be a bummer to get your PhD and make less money than you would with just a bachelor's degree in the corporate world.Obviously, money isn't everything, but it would be hard for me to justify the student loans and money spent on education. I'm sure their careers are very satisfying in other ways, so it must make up for it.
