Maybe it's my anal retentive personality, but I can't see how anyone has more than 4-5 unread emails at a time.

I do this every morning and through the day at different intervals. It gets to the point that when I don't have any unread emails, I feel lonely.

I keep a year's worth of emails in my inbox (none remain unread, of course). This makes it really easy for me to sort by sender and find the relevant email very quickly.

After each year, I'll create a folder for that year and dump the entire inbox in there.

I gave up on folders because I never could find a folder scheme that I liked. So now I just use search or sort by sender, and never spend more than 20 seconds looking for any email.

I sort emails by client and project. I only leave email in my inbox if it has information that needs to be addressed prior to filing away.

i have 22 emails in my gmail inbox, 2 unread. those 22 are roughly split equally between 3 labels, and i have quick link searches for each label, so i can quickly see the 6-7 unresolved emails in each category

Try using wolfwise through the groupwise fat client (some of our supported clients use it, as does my boss), along with unity IMAP through thunderbird (others of our clients use this, plus I've had the account forever), along with gmail through the web interface (personal email). All at once. It's a miracle I ever see anything at all.

I use gmail and I never delete anything, I just make it unread. I'm not so concerned with taking up space.

all emails with an attachment immediately goes to a personal folder, all other emails stay in my inbox until it gets too large then it gets stored permanently in a personal folder based on year.

I leave read emails in my inbox until I need to delete some for capacity reasons, though I do immediately delete notification-style emails like the ones from Facebook.

I have a bunch of unread emails that are basically NCSU-spam that I don't bother to delete or mark as read... stuff like "[person] has requested relief for [time][day] work shift" and all emails from Ken Tate addressed to basically everyone in the csc major about some event happening somewhere that I have no reason to care about.

Currently I have 37 unread emails.
