"“Alinea is a chef driven restaurant – we live and die by the work, cuisine and vision of Grant Achatz”. That is the view of Grant’s Business partner in Alinea.

Judging by our Academy’s opinions, the Chicago staff of Alinea can rest assured their lives are in safe hands with Achatz at the helm. And you’ll know why if you ever get to try dishes such as the all American peanut butter and jelly sandwich, served with bread wrapped round a grape on a specially made spike.

This is arguably the most cutting edge food in America.

Pretentious must = You cant afford it, and dont have the palate to appreciate any of it.

Which is totally cool. Thats why theres places like Olive Garden and Applebees.

^Ive hard of about half of them, almost all of the american ones, and have eaten at a few. The food each time was fucking mind blowing. And some of them werent as expensive as you'd might think.

Pretentious = dressing up a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, calling it the most cutting edge food in america, and charging god knows how much for it.

What do you do for a living??

I'd love to knock some of these restaurants off my list. I've only been able to go to the one in San Sebastian. Most amazing food experience I've ever had. But I will say that I dine out a lot in Charleston, and we've got some chefs down here that can do some pretty amazing things that weren't too far away from what I had in Spain. However, it was still on another level.

I can appreciate the difference between Outback and Morton's

But I don't think my palate is refined enough to appreciate the difference between Morton's and some of these places

So while I'd love to try some of them out, just for the experience, I'm not sure it would be worth it to try more than a handful of them at this point

Thats not pretentious. You wouldnt be paying god knows how much for a pbj. You'd be paying god knows how much for it as part of a 15-25 course tasting meal that delivers more flavor in a single bite than anything you've ever eaten. Its expensive, of course. Its insanely labor intenseive, and requires a serious degree of skill and precision.

Its also not the kind of place for those who think Golden Corral is a fine meal because you can eat all you want.

Pretentious is a place like...Solas. Mediocre at best food, at a high price because its "the place to be seen". That shit is a joke.

not a single resto in canada on the list... sounds about right. i NEVER eat out up here because the food is ubiquitously terrible and overpriced. theres *one* restaurant i like because they have grilled octopus that is divine, but I've only been to it once this year so far.

Its a menu that has a little flavored adhesive next to each listed entree than you can lick and get a taste of the food before you order, so you won't be ordering blind

it is expensive but there are super premium ingredients, elaborate cooking techniques and weird food technology used in some of these restaurants. I'm just pointing out things that increase the price besides ambiance, popularity and notoriety of the chef.

thats the caliber of restaurants i try to avoid entirely. fast food has its occasional advantage when you are travelling or its very late, pizza pretty similar i guess. But paying 15 bucks a meal for the same thing that comes from the freezer section at walmart? no thanks. I also dislike paying fine dining prices for stuff i can make better at home. Being a home chef has spoiled me entirely for restaurants.
