This is Raleigh's oldest restaurant, downtown on Martin St. I saw it in The N&O this morning...they are doing free breakfast tomorrow, selling 5 cent Cokes, and displaying their 70 year old cured ham that usually lives in the freezer. I ate here when I was a governor's page and thought it was pretty damn good and a fun, old school atmosphere, so if you are downtown tomorrow, I advise checking it out...

Which is curious because the muslims claim there is an alien rock inside it that originated before people arrived.

the N&O article was pretty good and i definitely want to go eat there sometime now, but it didn't mention anything about why the place is named Mecca. does TWW know why?

I'd estimate that most rocks, alien or not, originated before people arrived.

Since the real Mecca (actually, Makkah) is the center of Muslim worship and Islam, 'Mecca' is used to refer to any place which is the center or focus of any group of people, or activity, or a place that is important with respect to some attribute.

However, I don't understand why there are cities/towns in the US named 'Mecca'.
