Sony to stop making 3.5-inch floppies in March 2011

It's been years since I had a computer that used a floppy drive. I know a few old school geeks that still like to make various backups and rescue discs on floppies, but for most of us, the floppy died out years ago.

Sony is finally seeing the writing on the wall and has announced that it is pulling out of the floppy disc market in Japan. Sony has announced that it will no longer sell 3.5-inch floppy discs at the end of the current fiscal year in its home market.

This is a big blow to anyone looking to continue supporting the ancient discs; Sony holds 70% of the market. Sony's fiscal year will close at the end of March 2011. If you like floppies, you had better stock up before then. Sony was one of the first firms in the floppy market with offerings landing back in 1981."

Why the fuck are you still making them? I don't know of anyone with a floppy drive installed in a modern PC, since most BIOS flashes are done USB now. I have one thrown in the closet just for the hell of it, but I would never install it in my beast.

You would think when Blu-Ray/HD-DVD hit they would have had some notion this was done; or hell even with DVD and CD. I mean fuck 2011 are you shitting me

Ha, I loved it when AOL would send me diskettes in the mail with their software on it. I'd just delete the content and use it to hold 1.38mb of my own data. I'm sure everyone did this though.

never really had a reason for 1.38Mb floppies, even when they were the shit.
