Go find a teacher and appreciate them! What teachers did you have in school that inspired you or taught you something really useful? My AP Statistics teacher was the only math teacher I ever had who made me remotely interested in the subject, although the only thing I remember from that class was "If your p is low, reject the h0!" He was also my teacher for Algebra II and Pre-Calculus, and I think he's the reason I'm able to help my students with Algebra II today. If only I could apply those skills to something useful, like simple multiplication.

i appreciate you mrs. cake!!!one of my professors this year really inspired me. well 2 of them actually. they joint taught my death penalty jurisprudence course and they were AMAZING.widenhouse is a capital defense attorneyand bond has his JD but has only ever taught - never actually practiced. he actually taught widenhouse when he was in schoolour last class last week bond gave us this speech about what is really important in life. he said when he first got into academics after getting his JD he'd go to any speech and conference anything anywhere that was offered to him leaving his family behind. not spending enough time with him. then he got diagnosed with lou gehrigs and had a horrible prognosis and he decided that if he was going to die he wasn't going to go anywhere or do anything where he couldn't bring his family. and he uses a walker now and can't drive but he's still kicking years and years after his diagnosis. and he just said that yes career is important but that is not what life is about.i thought he was going to cry when he was talking to us it was really special i thought.

Our PTA kicks ass when it comes to Teacher Appreciation Week. They've got something planned for every day this week. It's a small group of parents who care enough to be part of the organization, but it's nice to know that there are some out there who have an investment in their children.
5/2/2010 7:31:22 PM
we don't have a PTA.
5/2/2010 7:34:39 PM
i'm not really sure what our pta does
5/2/2010 7:35:10 PM
I'll agree to this only if we get to exclude mambagrl.
5/2/2010 7:35:36 PM
for teacher appreciation week, we're going to fire seven of you
5/2/2010 7:35:56 PM
^ make sure they're tenured.
5/2/2010 7:37:47 PM
^^that's exactly what's going on at my school right now, with a nice dose of Judge Manning.
5/2/2010 7:41:19 PM
yay teachers
5/2/2010 7:52:52 PM
we might not make it to school this week digging out of a foot...of rain
5/2/2010 7:59:46 PM
I, too, appreciate MrsCake!
5/2/2010 8:00:04 PM
^^I do not appreciate you. No one should appreciate you.In appreciation of all other teachers everywhere, you should resign immediately. You do a disservice to the profession.[Edited on May 2, 2010 at 8:01 PM. Reason : ^]

I mean real teachers, not fake ones
5/2/2010 8:03:32 PM
^^ Shut up alias.
5/2/2010 8:07:11 PM
I appreciate anyone who teaches, because you have to be a very special kind of person to get into such an underappreciated profession. That includes mambagrl, provided that she is a teacher, alias or no.

I'll appreciate teachers when they stop thinking they are better than the rest of the school district & state employees because they should be the only ones that "need" a raise this year. Fuck you.BTW, I work with teachers and most don't feel they should get a raise when other teachers and state employees are going to lose their jobs. But some feel so entitled they think they should. Don't think this is the best year to be siding with Bev for a pay raise.[Edited on May 2, 2010 at 9:39 PM. Reason : ]
5/2/2010 9:39:04 PM
Damn, Nighthawk, who have you been talking to? Most of the teachers I know are just hoping there will be enough in the budget to replace some old textbooks--I don't know anyone hunting for a raise.
5/2/2010 10:08:50 PM
they were on the news whining about it not too long ago
5/2/2010 10:10:23 PM
they haven't been bumped on the payscale in awhile (teachers w/ 5 years exp are getting paid at the 3 or 4 year level, etc) but a raise? when pigs fly.
5/2/2010 10:14:15 PM
I appreciate twoozles!
5/2/2010 10:16:41 PM
Oh, the salary scale thing...I can kind of understand that. But that's just about how teachers get paid, not about "deserving" a raise--it's not based on any kind of merit or performance standard, just on years of experience, and it sucks for a third-year teacher who is still making first-year pay (when you're that early on, the difference is ~$1000/yr.)It's definitely among the more trivial of concerns when so many people are losing their jobs, but it highlights the fact that there needs to be a better way to manage the budget. WCPSS can announce a hiring freeze every month if they want, but it can't logistically hold up because there is teacher turnover and people are needed to fill those openings. You cannot have 50 students in a class.
5/2/2010 10:18:57 PM
thanks, amna
5/3/2010 5:34:30 PM
How did I miss this thread? Girl, I'ma appreciate you with my dick.
5/3/2010 5:54:42 PM
I heard they will lift the hiring freeze once they finish shifting students around to the new schools (Heritage is one) so the numbers settle out and each school will be able to see how many teachers they can "keep"...and then the teachers will finish shifting/being moved, then they will start hiring from outside again.
5/3/2010 5:56:16 PM
69 X 2 = FUN.
5/3/2010 6:08:23 PM
Nothing says "We appreciate you" like "We might not have a job for you next year because they are cutting our numbers."
5/4/2010 6:13:50 PM
5/4/2010 6:15:09 PM
but (like at my school) we can give you a quart of strawberries!
5/4/2010 6:17:06 PM
free chicken sandwiches at triangle town chick-fil-a today! i had about 12 teachers hand me their IDs when they found out i was making a run. i think everyone behind me in line was annoyed & i'm pretty sure i looked like a fool in the parking lot balancing two huge chick-fil-a bags & drink holders. but YAY free lunch!

I appreciate the 10% of teachers who can teach. I slightly applaud the other 90% who teach, but are in the completely wrong profession.
5/4/2010 6:21:39 PM
^What makes a good teacher to you? Just curious what people who are not in education consider a good teacher.Free chic fil a...aww...Is that all week or just today?
5/4/2010 9:13:17 PM
A teacher needs to be a master of many disciplines, for the best educators can make any concept relate to another.
5/4/2010 9:16:09 PM
^^i believe it was just today^so you think someone who teaches only one subject cannot actually teach? huh?
