dead week you still technically had class. and a lot times, i still had shit due even though it was dead week. But at schools like App they had reading days which were just days of nothing. class was already over, assignments were already in. so basically it was a vacation day, unless you were a square.

ok, fall 2009 was the first semester of this and spring 2010 is gonna be the last semester. we still have dead week where you go to class like normal. before, exams ran mon-fri on the first week and mon-wed on the second week. now mon and tues of the first week after dead week are "reading days" where there is no class and no exams. exams run wed-fri of that first week and mon-fri of the second week.

reading days should be called "sleeping days" and all they do is put off the inevitable. it's bullshit for slackers and i'm glad they're getting rid of it, even though i'm graduating this semester.

i really, really wish i had a couple of reading days before some of my exams this year.

i really would have used them the way they were intended though.

it just puts two more days between me and getting the hell out of raleigh

i also support getting rid of the 3 week xmas break. make that shit 1 week and we won't have to go back to school until september.

i think he's just saying he's glad because he likes getting his exams over with sooner.

and i agree. i loved the second week being mon-wed. that way if i was done with exams earlier i could pack up and gtfo and not have to wait through the week. it was like an extra week of summer

so you would seriously want to have a 3 hour final exam on monday morning?

I work like 12-22 hours on the weekend. I know the majority of people who have jobs in school work on the weekends.

At Maryland, there is no dead week, no reading days, and you have exams on Saturday. Suck it up.

hah. its so funny how different everyone can be.

by our last exam almost everyone i talked to (which isn't a representation i know) all said we would rather have an extra day or two of studying rather than getting out a day or two earlier.

On the moon theres no oxygen suck it up

^Yeah i mean out of the summer 2 days doesn't really mean anything, but i'd rather have the option to rest / study before i crank out 25% of the grade for some classes.

exactly. or talk your professor into letting you take it in his office during the first week. not only do you get that whole second week off, but it frees up that weekend between exam weeks so you don't have to spend it studying.

"A little paradise before exams

The Facts:
The Reading Days the University delivered for the 2009-2010 academic year were not the ones students expected. The two days each semester simply added to the length of the semester instead of replacing two days of Dead Week.

Our Opinion:
The Reading Days are not as desirable as students may have liked, but they will likely be altered next year when the UNC System calendar kicks in; thus, students should take the days off and enjoy them to their fullest potential.

The University, for the purpose of studying, has blocked off the calendar on the Monday and Tuesday of the first exam week. The “Reading Days” — in other English speaking countries studying is referred to as reading — are supposedly an opportunity for students to prepare for their examinations and transition from the academic semester to exam week.

These Reading Days were not the ones students had hoped for, and many students have complained that they should be renamed drinking or sleeping days, but they are going to occur nonetheless. Students should take advantage of the free time — what amounts to a four-day weekend — and use it to its fullest. Carpe diem if you will.

When Reading Days were discussed last year, the inclination was that the days would supplant the final two days of the farce that is Dead Week. Instead, the University tacked the days onto the end of the semester, thereby extending the misery of exam week and shortening the break leading up to the winter holidays.

Regardless of the University’s curious planning, the two days represent an opportunity for students to do as they please. For those who have a Wednesday exam, it’s a chance to enjoy your weekend and then study; for other students the days can be utilized for indulging in weaknesses or catching up on much deserved rest. If nothing else it’s an opportunity to go on the Hillsborough Hike Friday evening with the knowledge that a day-long Saturday hangover is tolerable.

Next year, the University will change over to the UNC System universal calendar and the Reading Days could be altered or eliminated altogether. Complaining about the fact that they were not as promised is nonsensical and fails to address the more pertinent issue: it’s two days off before exams.

Seize the opportunity for some personal time and make the most of Reading Days. The occasion may be short-lived; students should take them for what they are and enjoy a little piece of freedom before the rigors of exams begin."

so pretty much folks are whining because they thought they would just cancel two days of class. iirc, they can't do that because class must be held for a certain number of days to maintain accreditation for some programs. anyone know more about that?
