Find me a decent laptop in the <$1300 (ish) price range that meets the engineering qualifications. For stock computers, I like HP. Dells are OK, just overpriced. Toshibas blow, but I'm only judging from my mom's shitty laptop. Sony Vaios are also overpriced. Acers are cheap.I want a decent dedicated graphics card (at least 256mb dedicated) and 4gb of RAM. My parents are looking at: http://ncsu.collegestoreonline.com/ePOS?this_category=209&store=432&item_number=40000039365&form=shared3%2fgm%2fdetail.html&design=432, but if they buy it from the bookstore, the price is guaranteed to be inflated.

Just get something mid range that will support MS Office products, Maple, and perhaps Auto-Cad light. You probably aren't going to run something like SolidWorks on your personal laptop. By the time you hit your junior year, your computer will be dated and you will want to just use university computers for dedicated graphics programs.[Edited on May 23, 2010 at 2:07 PM. Reason : k]

^^exactly.spending that much money on a laptop now is absurd. you won't even begin to use it until junior year most likely..and a huge amount if not all of what you want to do you'll be doing at school anyways

Get a computer through the bookstore with the extended warranty. When yours finally shits itself, you can turn it in to the university to be sent off for warranty work and the school will give you a loaner laptop in the mean time. It is definitely worth your money. Pretty much all of my friends who had laptops went through 2 or 3 laptops during their school career, or their laptop was so shitty it wasn't worth using by the second or third year. I've had mine since freshmen year, and while I've sent it off for warranty work, I never had to pay another dime.

I'm still a fan of the Lenovo laptop. T series I swear by. W series I almost lust over.However. If I had the ~$1000 I spent when I started college I would spend around $600 on a mid range desktop (core2quad, maybe i5/i7), then get a 22-24" IPS panel. Then for class I'd get a 10+ hour batter life netbook - probably a 10-12" ASUS. I absolutely loved the power I had in my laptop in terms of I could pack it up and take horsepower anywhere I needed it. But that was like 12-15 pounds by the time I tossed in the brick, mouse, and added in padded case. And when it comes down to it 98% of my work was word processing and excel. The entire campus is wireless, just sign in to the VCL when you need Maple or Matlab. Worst case scenario VPN your desktop for number crunching power.

To the OP:HPs are pure shit. There is no debate about it. They have the highest failure rating of the major brands. Dells are ok (in the middle). Asus, Sony, and Toshibas have the lowest failure rates. ^Lenovos also have high failure rates.
5/23/2010 4:20:25 PM
Get an Asus.

^no. HPs are pure shit. I've seen more of those fail than any other brand... which is eerily similar to other peoples' findings....^^,^ here is one such report by squaretrade, the company that does warranties on computers. http://www.squaretrade.com/htm/pdf/SquareTrade_laptop_reliability_1109.pdf

i disagree that Dells are overpriced. the XPS line of Dells is definitely overpriced, but inspiron and studio are good lines that are decently priced as long as you don't go crazy with upgrade options.[Edited on May 24, 2010 at 8:49 AM. Reason : vostro is also affordable]

^^^a.) Analogy: If there's a candy brand, let's say Hershey's... You're experienced with their products... let's say for the sake of argument you've only tried Reece's cups and Kit-Kat bars before and you liked both products. Would it be fair to say that you'd try another one of their products? I've tried HP's several of HP's computers; I liked them all. Therefore... I will stick with HP and get another one. It's not your computer, so I really don't understand why you care so much...b.) TUFF GUY.
