Why is it that old movies always have the credits in the beginning and almost all new movies have them at the end? Also what year did "The End" finally get scrapped?

The UAW demanded that their workers not be forced to sit through the credits before the movie. It required too much reading and would put the workers to sleep before the movie even started. So after much negotiations (such as UAW workers can be used for free in any automobile factory scenes, like in Tommy Boy), the credits were moved to the end of the movie. It was a good move IMO."The End" was finally scrapped when they moved the credits to the end of the movie, as the credits served the same exact purpose.
