I recently moved into a 2br apartment so now I basically have a second room with a second bed. Unfortunately I don't really have all the necessary furniture to adequately put all my stuff everywhere. Has anyone successfully dealt with this without buying lots of new furniture? It's just weird.. I would've thought with more space there wouldn't be this problem but it's actually the new space that's creating the problem.

My second room is the catch-all space. I have an extra dresser and a big table and my desk and all the random crap I don't have anywhere else to store. I don't have a bed in there because I considered it my office when I moved in. Now my computer lives in the living room though, so it's pretty useless.

I dealt with it by not being a woman and worrying about having empty space.

I moved from a 2br to a 1br and have more square footage now than beforeAwkwardly big living room and bathroom

I'd like one of those fold-up beds in my extra room. That way it can be an office and a guest room
6/25/2010 11:50:24 AM
I thought it would be cool to have a guest roomBut it ended up that most of my guests would either pass out on the couch in the living room or banging on the bed in my roomSo it was pretty much a waste

^LOL i'm so glad i found this!this seems like a decent thread to bump with this issue...Any tips on organizing after downsizing to a smaller kitchen? Obviously weeding out the unnecessary utensils, pots pans, and dishware is first. But i'm a little worried about food storage as well since I won't have a pantry. Been toying with the idea of a bread rack or some "external pantry". Thoughts? Also going to try and fab a liquor cabinet of sorts to keep my fancy glassware and bottles off the counter top and from cluttering cabinet space.

^^I have this issue right now and it's stressing me out!Luckily I have an empty wall in my new kitchen so I'm gonna install some sort of shelving system. The Elfa is making me smile right about now, so I'll get some measurements together and hit container store this weekend. (something like this but on a smaller scale)[Edited on March 15, 2011 at 9:59 AM. Reason : e]

Shop 2-3 days a week and only get what you need until your next shopping trip. Fresh food is better and you'll waste less. I hit HT, Fresh Market or Trader Joe's several times a week and never have kitchen clutter.

^^^^Look at a baker's rack. Can be good to keep some of your cookwares etc. on, freeing up space in your cabinets for food. Something like a large wine rack or a bar/cabinet or sorts is also a good idea. Be sure your cabnit is something made or from somewhere else though. Also, generally speaking, if you're on the lookout for cheap(er) furniture and don't feel like dealing with the craigslist bullshit, check out consignment and used furniture stores (Shelton's near downtown is a good one to try). When my girlfriend and I moved from 1-bedroom places into a large 3br house, we found several nice pieces of furniture at these establishments.[Edited on March 15, 2011 at 10:02 AM. Reason : carrots]

Slave, do you find yourself spending more with these smaller trips than you would during say 1 large weekly trip? I am actually looking forward to the smaller space for this exact reason of not wasting food or over buying.

I used an external pantry for a couple years. Target was some good set ups.

I once moved from a 2 bedroom apartment to a 3 bedroom house. I just used the 3rd bedroom for storage.
