A co-worker at my last job would nervously settle on "African-American" when casting about for a synonym for black. I enjoyed interrupting him to ask, "What part of Africa is he from?"
7/23/2010 7:02:03 PM
lolololol
7/23/2010 7:02:43 PM
hayes, because all 'white' people have the same kinda hair. and all 'black' people have the same kind as well.both my parents are black, but we've never been to Africa. i guess American would be the most correct term.

What would be the equivalent term for black people in the UK?African-English? (or -Scottish, -Irish, -Welsh)African-British?And to take it to an extreme, if an African settles in say, China, has children there with his African wife, and the kids are granted citizenship, how should the children be referenced?Chinese?African?African-Chinese?Black?Black Chinese?

I mean it doesn't bother me. I don't fly off into a crazed anti-PC rant about reverse racism and american oversensitivity every time I hear it like some people. But I don't use it myself.
7/23/2010 8:23:28 PM
I have a good black friend who would rather just prefer to be called black. He agrees that most black people in the U.S. were not born in Africa.
7/23/2010 8:39:54 PM
I just call 'em black. They call me white. I call asian people mid-toned. It's just a color people, get up off it. Unless you're willing to michael jackson you're stuck that way. Get a tan and shut up.

Dont fool yourselvesI'm AstralAdvent and i approved this message.

I actually like the hyphenated terms, because they remind (the majority of) us that our indigenous ancestry was not in America; it's too sad that "European-American" is mostly used by white supremacists like David Dukebut those terms are only appropriate in America; elsewhere terms like "black" or "African" are more appropriate[Edited on July 23, 2010 at 9:25 PM. Reason : IIRC in the UK it's commonly "Black British"

7/23/2010 9:49:21 PM
I've pretty much stopped saying it after watching the ralphie may stand up talking about it, he made a lot of sense, why don't you call white people european americans then, plus if you actually have a dude from africa like my friend in high school then it just confuses things, and usually whenever a white guy uses the term african american he's making some stupid overly pc statementjust plain black folks are fine with me

^ I disagree. The awesome thing about America is that you don't have to give up your old nationality when you get here. America is united by an idea, not an ethnicity or nationality. That's why we're doing better with immigration than Europe. I think America would be diminished if we never had any Greek festivals or we canceled the Highland Games or the various Chinatowns went away. Being proud of where you came from is not mutually exclusive with being proud of where you are.
7/30/2010 6:56:09 AM
African-American is the most abused and over used ethnic description. Just as with any hyphenated classification, it means they immigrated to here, thus not being a naturalized citizen. We are united by the idea, not the ethnicity, and the idea is that we are all Americans who don't need to segregate ourselves into sub populations/nationalities. So, just as ^^ posted. And to me, this is a grammar/language issue not a political/ethnic one. Nothing asks you to give up or forget your heritage; however, for clear and proper communication, we should use words that best describe things, thus African-American would describe an African person who became a citizen of the U.S. Look at any other nationality/ethnicity... most, if not, all consider themselves Americans with xxxxx heritage.
