Side hugs are lame, in my opinion. If you want to give someone a hug, don't let it be weak.For more reference, this may help.If the guy's arm goes across a girl's back on onto her waist, it can be a protective sort of notion, possibly a flirting thing, but it can also be "here, let me draw you closer to me to invade your personal space even more but being less direct in doing so."

i've actually thought about this a bit while browsing pics on fb. to me putting your arm around the other person's waist shows compassion and/or intimacy while putting your arm around the other person's shoulder seems to show possessiveness/domination over the other person. i go for the waist.[Edited on August 8, 2010 at 1:06 PM.
