In Before:Well, I generally come in at least fifteen minutes late...after that I just sorta space out for about an hour. I just stare at my desk; but it looks like I'm working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch, too. I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work. But in reality: Get in around 7:30amCheck Email, News, Eat BreakfastWork until lunch11:30am-12:30pm lunch break. Usually read at my deskWork after lunchGo homeof course during the work periods, there are intermittent periods of non-work
8/17/2010 9:10:59 AM
I get in with the carpool around 7:45. I log into my workstation and laugh at the awful escalation e-mails sent overnight by the receptionists in California. On Skype, my carpool friends and I review the scuttlebutt around the office: who's out sick, who's talking on the speakerphone like a jackass, who brought doughnuts, etc.If I had database restore requests waiting from the night before, I check on them. If I have open cases waiting on another department to return a result, I check for the results. I try to have coffee by this time.My team leader comes around by 9:00 to chat with everyone and review the plan for the day, if there is one. That usually means bug testing for our latest release candidate. There's generally no new work for the day until 10:00. I like to tweak my demo data and work on custom reports and shit like that during this time. Sometimes, I read documentation for other products.None of my clients are live with the product I support yet, so I don't many support cases. I spend the morning helping my friends with cases. We usually just bullshit over Skype, but the new guy gets stuff that needs to be reviewed at his desk. That gives me a chance to say hello to my old team.Lunch at noon. Half the time, I've brought leftovers. The other half of the time, we go out. We have a weekly pilgrimage to Pei Wei.If it's a Monday or Thursday, I usually have a call with a client in the afternoon to review the status of their implementation. Right now, that means a lot of defining roles: Who does what in your organization, who should I talk to when a decision needs to be made about implementation, and what do your current workflows look like?I usually wind up documenting bugs or helping my teammates with product-specific cases most of the afternoon. If there's nothing more interesting going on, I bullshit on the Internet or complain to my team lead about development issues that I have a snowball's chance in Hell of influencing.Work ends at 5:00. I head downstairs and meet my carpool in the lobby. On the ride home, we decompress. If there was an interesting case, we talk about it in detail and discuss ways the issue could have been prevented. This is the most productive part of my day with regard to my job. We also vent about irritating clients, irritating co-workers, and irritating bugs in the core platform.By the time I get home, work is a distant memory. Even though I work with some of my best friends, I like to keep my work and my personal life compartmentalized.[Edited on August 17, 2010 at 9:19 AM. Reason : wrt]
