A few years back when it was at State I tried to get on. I made it to the final round of like 20 people, but at that point they weren't even keeping track of how you did on the questions, they wanted to see how you would be on camera. I'd hoped that the only other people to make it that far would be even more awkward and pathetic than me, but no such luck.

^^^That's bullshit. TWW, destroy Jeopardy! But seriously, I know someone who made it on and totally bombed. He claimed his buzzer thingy wasn't working properly and refused to talk anymore about it. It's a hush whispered type thing now.^AHAHA[Edited on August 19, 2010 at 7:06 PM. Reason : aaa]

The buzzers are pretty weird -- as I understand it, if you press it too early it delays you for some extremely long period of time. And it's very difficult to figure out when "too early is."If I recall correctly, the first stage was just answer ten questions on a sheet of paper in a decent amount of time (basically just quick enough that you couldn't use your phone to answer all ten). If you got seven of those you went onto the next round. I was surprised at how many got weeded out by this phase -- well over a thousand, at least. Then later you went to a big room in talley, they gave you an answer sheet, and a recording of Trebeck read some sixty-odd questions to you. I don't know how many you had to get right (they didn't give you back a score or the right answers or anything), but that pared it down from several hundred to maybe ten or so the day I did it, and then ten others when they repeated the process the next day.The ten people then ran through some mock questions at podiums with buzzers and more recorded Trebek questions while a producer told you if you were right or wrong. Then we each wrote down three of those stupid little stories they tell after the first break. And then some other asshat got picked and lost early.

Yeah, the buzzers are a big deal. Ken Jennings talked about actually practicing at home.I couldn't do it even if I knew most of the answers. I'd fall apart with nerves.
