^Yeah I like how they mentioned UNC and NC State just comes across as a side note.
9/3/2010 12:07:06 PM
Of all the cool stuff in town they went with a picture of Dorton Arena.
9/3/2010 12:10:01 PM
they should have just used a picture of Harrellson and told the "it's sinking cause an engineering student built it story"...

^^My thought too, but when you look at the photo again you see the State Fair is going on. This rating is, "Best Place to Raise a Family." Children like the fair. At least they didn't show the Art Tower on Capital Blvd. Pullen Park would have been a good choice though.[Edited on September 3, 2010 at 12:14 PM. Reason : .]

9/3/2010 12:19:25 PM
^^^Except it's been closed ever since they decided to do renovations during peak park-going season.Seriously, spread that crap out over a few winters.

What's wrong with Dorton arena? It's a pretty influential example of modern architecture and an easily recognizable Raleigh landmark.

Dorton Arena ... "influential modern architecture?"*cough*...hey whatever happened to the statue of Sir Walter that was near the Capitol. I loved that guy. he'd be a good picture.
9/3/2010 2:51:43 PM
Is it on Fayetteville St now?

"expected to influence"...so what famous architect or noteworthy style of architecture did Dorton Arena, or its architect, actually influence?[Edited on September 3, 2010 at 2:58 PM. Reason : ]

I like Raleigh and wanted to move back here to settle and start my career (which I did). But I also am not a huge fan of the public school system and will probably want to move back to the Tri-State area when my kids are school age.
9/3/2010 4:28:44 PM
tell me one place where the public school system doesnt have problems.
9/3/2010 4:29:46 PM
9/3/2010 4:38:58 PM
cool, thats def some Finnish design there. my wife's a Finnish citizen, so i get a lot of exposure to that sort of aesthetic.

I love the mid century modern stuff. I've got credenzas from Lehigh-Leopold & Knoll, Knoll & Eilersen sofas, Herman Miller chairs at the dinner table, etc.p.s. http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/2008/03/02/79-modern-furniture/lol

I guess if you want to raise sheltered cul-de-sec minivan brats without much culture or awareness of the "real" world.[Edited on September 3, 2010 at 5:15 PM. Reason : minivan]

If any of you are in the Raleigh area you should really check out the Gregg Museum this fall.http://www.ncsu.edu/gregg/exhibitions/modernist.htmlYou'll see a lot of the modern architecture and design mentioned in this thread.
9/3/2010 6:18:19 PM
I always forget about Gregg. For four years it's been that place in Talley. If Talley were nicer, I'd probably want to go there more often.
