I have an interview this morning, and my slacks are too tight, so I'm going to use this other pair of pants. My question: Does this match? The pants are not dark black, they are light black with a brown/maroon pin stripe.[Edited on October 1, 2010 at 9:15 AM. Reason : nooooooo!!!!! damn you tinypic!!!]

I like it. The stripes in the tie - are those more brown, or maroon? I hope maroon.

Go for it. The worst that can happen is that you resemble a clown and they make fun of you and throw your resume in the trash as soon as you leave.(I have no opinion on the actual outfit; I'm no good at that junk which is why I keep it basic as shit when I dress up.)
10/1/2010 9:19:29 AM
the stripes in the tie have no color, it is just the reflective thread.
10/1/2010 9:22:54 AM
is that a green shirt? there's your first mistake.
10/1/2010 10:19:10 AM
You should have secured a proper suit as soon as you started applying for jobs. The green shirt is inappropriate, depending on who/what you're interviewing for.

Right on, Brother.
10/1/2010 11:24:29 AM
green shirt is no.get white shirt.just keep it simple and neat looking is usually the best thing to do.
10/1/2010 11:25:17 AM
Also black pants are bad. Unless by "light black" you mean charcoal, in which case you are unwittingly on the right track.
10/1/2010 12:07:04 PM
lol, i love it how the people giving advice for interview attire are unemployed or work food service jobs.
10/1/2010 12:12:45 PM
Yeah, everybody hated on my outfit when in my interview thread, and now I'm about to get a bonus of 15% of my annual salary. There is a bunch of shit you can read and drive yourself crazy figuring out, but I think bmel said it best when she told me just to wear whatever I'd be the most confident in.
10/1/2010 1:26:59 PM
Yeah, but it doesn't make any sense. Why would a guy with "little fashion sense" try to pull of a green shirt at a job interview? All the books say white shirt is preferable. That just seems sooo easy.
10/1/2010 1:31:02 PM
I have no fashion sense and I went with a red shirt which is apparently a faux pas, it worked out pretty well for me.
10/1/2010 1:34:52 PM
1) fashion is stupid, as are people that care about it (on both the "dress to please" or "judge others" side of things)2) there is no such thing as "dark black" or "light black". I believe the word you're looking for is "gray".3) There is nothing inappropriate about a green, red, or any other color shirt. If they don't hire you b/c of your shirt, their loss. That is all.

Another vote against the green shirt. It may not make a difference but why take the chance? Just go white/light blue.
10/1/2010 1:44:37 PM
I bet your criticisms made him sweaty and insecure throughout the whole interview process.
10/1/2010 3:19:59 PM
haha
10/1/2010 3:21:37 PM
A: I don't own a white shirt.B: One of the interviewers had on a sweater vest.C: There is more than one kind of black; ie: Faded black = light black, non-faded = dark black or glossy black.D: Interview went ok. The spoken part went pretty well I think, however the demonstration part of the interview could have gone better. I should have brushed up on using version 1.5 or 2.0 of the software, not 3.0... which I could have done if I had bothered to ask which version they use when they asked if I had any questions when they called me to do the interview.

I wore a grey shirt with black tie, black slacks and shiny shoes to work for the first day and the CEO of the company made fun of me . Haha oh well I wear polos and jeans now so I'm
10/1/2010 5:13:20 PM
petejames I'm going to go out on a limb here and say maybe they are giving you a raise and you got the job b/c you know what you are doing, and you do it well.Just a thought.

I love dressing up for interviews... because i'm fly as hayle
10/1/2010 6:26:09 PM
I used safety pins instead of cuff links for my shirt for my last interview (a year ago at my current job). My boss still remembers and chuckles about it.
10/1/2010 6:47:39 PM
^^^Thats my point exactly...it had nothing to do with what I wore to the interview
10/3/2010 11:56:10 AM
i think its safe to say what you wear isn't going to get you the job, unless you're applying at hooters maybe, but it can in some cases certainly prevent you from getting it. better to be safe than sorry. i'd much rather be overdressed and see the company is more casual and then adapt that way than the other.

The point is they didn't get the job (unless they wore a suit to their interview at McDonalds). I think its generally a good practice to take advice from those who have successfully conquered whatever topic they are giving advice on and therefore have a practical knowledge rather than those who only have a theoretical knowledge

^^ Haha I know. But I've had it confirmed with several sources that the gold buckle is the way to go in the financial services industry and a few professional service lines (CPA, JD, etc.). Makes sense for larger investment banks...though they are all about IT streamlining their banking culture there is still a sense of slick hair, leather-bound library, red upholstered throne, cigar-wielding men running the show.

eww.i would NEVER wear a belt with a gold buckle, rose gold perhaps, but not yellow gold colored. i did as a kid in the 90s, but never again. same with gold colored eyeglass frames and gold colored metal watch bracelet.love rose gold, though.
