Between the university & the town they throw a couple hundred thousand every year at shutting down the street, facilitating the event, providing safety, and cleaning up afterward. It's no surprise that they want to cut costs especially when they've had 80,000+ people turn out to the event before (keep in mind Chapel Hill only has a population of 55 k, not all of whom participate). Its still easy enough to bus in around 6 before they shut things down, or park somewhere like the mall & take a taxi (& then bus out, they usually do buses out if you don't want to take a taxi again), or just park at a nearby apartment complex that isn't too far from downtown. All that said, the simple solution is just go to Hboro st instead on whatever night the haunted halloween on hillsborough ends up happening.

I plan to support Hboro instead this year....I guess I'll go on Friday AND Sunday. Not really sure what the consensus is on that.

What is up with all of this confusion about when the Haunted Hike is? It has always been on Halloween and will be again. All of the other universities have their Halloween parties on Halloween too. It's college, not grade school. There is no bed time curfew Sunday through Thursday.[Edited on October 19, 2010 at 1:11 AM. Reason : .]

^The confusion seems to be because some people are pushing Friday, some people are pushing Halloween (Sunday):wdprice3:

Can't they just turn this into a Halloween party on Halloween? Last year Halloween was on Saturday, so that is why it was then. The facebook page says Saturday though. The hike is different. The tradition is the last Friday (?) before exams. That date all depends on when they start exams. On the other hand, Halloween is always October 31st.

Haunted Hike is Saturday night the 30th.
10/19/2010 10:49:47 PM
which sucks, cause that is when all the halloween parties are that I know of... oh well...
10/19/2010 10:51:47 PM
Wait, now people say it's Saturday?UGH.Honestly don't know who to believe.
10/19/2010 11:43:55 PM
Michael is right it's a made up hike used to trick students.
10/19/2010 11:47:10 PM
^^Yeah I saw a fb group that says it is Saturday. If they want to make this a real tradition then it should be held on Halloween no matter what night that is. I guess Sate students have to be in bed by 8:00 pm on Sunday since they have school in the morning. If mommy and daddy catch them out after 8:00 pm then they might take their allowance away from them.

Cool your jets, everyone.Let's not forget what Halloween on Hillsborough should be about:- Large masses of drunk students on Hboro street- Tons of awesome/slutty/clever costumes to seeBonus:- Help bring more life/business to Hboro streetIt's not about celebrating a holiday on the exact date. It's about getting the most people out to the street on the same night for maximum fun, and I think an organized Facebook event for Saturday night will bring more students out than assuming everyone will be up for it on Sunday night.Sure, you can call out all the squares that would skip Sunday night because of class/work on Monday, or you can just drop it and agree to a night that works for more people. And then party both nights.Regardless, fuck Franklin Street, fuck Chapel Hill, and FUCK UNC.
10/20/2010 10:29:54 AM
sucks I will miss it for the first time because they are doing it on saturday instead of friday
10/20/2010 10:31:33 AM
Yeah, Friday night probably would have worked as well as Saturday. I guess Saturday is closer to the actual holiday. People can still have parties Friday night or Saturday evening, or if they're behind use Saturday to figure out a costume.I'll probably be on Hboro in costume both nights anyways, any house party I go to will be just a block away.

Here is a link to the facebook event:http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/event.php?eid=103036469763899I strongly encourage anyone who has been to a Haunted Hillsborough Hike before, or who plans to go this year, should write up a story and submit it here:http://www.thewolfweb.com/story_submit.aspxIt'd be a shame for a tradition that TWW has had a hand in to not make it to the front page. A short sentence or two on the who, what, when, where, and how would be great.

Chapel Hill Halloween is ending at 11:30pm. http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/8541858/

Sorry, but the hike was a bit to crowded last night. I'm not trying to stand in a line of 50 waiting to get into Waba or the bowling alley. Also, why dont they just close down hillsborough? The sidewalks were completely packed and the cops weren't letting anyone walk in the street.
10/31/2010 6:31:45 PM
^I'm guessing noone was organized enough to apply for the permits? Maybe a student government project for next year? The city doesn't usually spontaneously close streets.I'm guessing the logical organizations didn't want to do another event after the Hillsborough St. festival in September.

So who has pictures of our Hike? I was at ECU and it was a little ghetto...but the girls there are F I N E.

^411:30 was when it is being reported to have closed. I looked at my watch specifically when it happened (& by watch I mean cell phone) so that I could complain about the closing it early. It was 11:41 when I had to get off the street. The website & official press releases all said the street would reopen to traffic at midnight. And they had to seen some cleaning crews & some big truck, maybe some kind of street sweeper, through too, first to have it re-opened by midnight to traffic. But things continued, in a diminished capacity, on the sidewalks which were still very much open on both sides of the street, just not in the middle of the street.I didn't bus out of downtown until 1:05am (a stop by time out before going, although the last buses didn't leave downtown until after 2 am), and still saw some costumes around the whole time on the sidewalks & coming out of the bars. Still a sucky move though. At least they didn't gas us like Wilmington [Edited on November 1, 2010 at 10:35 PM. Reason : .]
