He was born in Farmville, VA. Joined the Air Force, and met his future wife in Fayetteville, because he went to church on Mother's Day, since he couldn't be home with his mother - this church was Snyder Baptist. They got married there. After the Air Force, he went to seminary. Right at graduation, the Foreign Mission Board came into a property in Zambia that was required by the donor to remain a farm. Tom took the post, his 3 kids, and his wife (a nurse) to Zambia. There was no electricity, running water, or any farming beyond subsistence. His wife set up a health clinic in the courtyard. Tom took correspondence courses from NCSU and got his masters in Agricultural Science in 1987. Their sponsor church was Snyder Baptist. When they found they were unexpectedly expecting, Snyder gathered donations for baby essentials, and shipped them to Zambia. He and his wife retired to Angier in 1997, after 27 years as missionaries. He was buried September 27th, 2010, with full military honors in Fayetteville, after a funeral at Snyder. The pastor who performed his marriage was present. Part of his burial service at Sandhills Veterans' Cemetery was spoken in the dialect of the area of Zambia where he served. His wife was buried there in 2004.
