pointing up or down? I always load with them up. That's the way pops does it so I learned it from him. Errbody else I know seems to load with them pointing down.
11/23/2010 8:10:32 PM
you gon stab yoself
11/23/2010 8:11:56 PM
Knife blades down. Forks and spoons up.
11/23/2010 8:12:33 PM
My good knives do not go in the dishwasher.Butter knives and such go blade down, because you shouldn't be touching the clean blade dumbass.
11/23/2010 8:12:44 PM
one time a blade was angled so i didnt see it and i reached down to pick up the silverware tray up and it sliced the shit out of my palm
11/23/2010 8:19:04 PM
What is a clean blade dumbass?
11/23/2010 8:21:37 PM
[ forks ][ spoons ][ butter knives ][stirring spoons/spatulas][ sharp knives ]all blades, and tines down. stirring spoons go handle down only because they dont fit otherwise
11/23/2010 8:22:28 PM
Everything pointed down so I only have to touch the handle part of the utensils.
11/23/2010 8:23:14 PM
i lay sharp knives flat on the top shelf
11/23/2010 8:34:34 PM
everything pointed down
11/23/2010 8:36:56 PM
Blades up if its only bloodstainsBlades down if there's chunks of meat
11/23/2010 8:37:14 PM
I place my knives sideways on the top rack.
11/23/2010 8:49:57 PM
i do them pointing up toomy father taught me this as well.
11/23/2010 8:50:55 PM
Down.
11/23/2010 8:52:11 PM
I've heard the argument that loading them facing down would dull them prematurely, but I never put much stock in it.
11/23/2010 8:53:28 PM
Everything pointed up
everything down, except about half the spoons up so they don't nest
11/23/2010 9:22:37 PM
only the butter knives. My nice knives are not to see the inside of a dishwasher. It's not like a butter knife is going to cut me, so the question is really, "Forks, up or down???"
11/23/2010 10:02:15 PM
TWW taught me to separate my silverware. I used to put all forks/spoons/knives together, but you smart asses taught me that if you mix em up they won't nest together. Thanks Tdubb Also my good knives are only washed by hand. Butta knives go blade down
11/23/2010 10:06:58 PM
11/23/2010 10:21:15 PM
11/23/2010 10:39:50 PM
I always load them pointing down except in our dishwasher at our lake house my mom insists that I load them pointing up (something about the dishwasher, I've never really bothered to understand it) and I can't stand it for two reasonsa) I've stabbed myself several times while trying to unload the utensilsb) I have to hold the knives by the dirty blades to put them in the dishwasher and get sauce/food/other crap all over my hands in the processPutting them in blade down just seems to be an all around better system
11/23/2010 10:44:04 PM
Knives up, spoons down
11/23/2010 10:47:14 PM
11/23/2010 10:48:53 PM
i don't have a dishwasher
11/23/2010 10:53:29 PM
i always loaded them up when i was younger. my mom always said it made them get cleaned better (like no crusty stuff left on them) but i don't know if that is true or not. ANYWAYto avoid getting stabbed (and because this is how my parents always did it) i'd remove the basket of utensils, and dump on a clean dishcloth on the counter. we also did it this way cause we had 2 sets of silverware. a shitty one we used for, i don't even know what. and then our everyday. so we had to sort them. and this also helped if you took 'em fresh out so you could pat them dry before putting them awayafter living on my own, i started putting them in face down because that seems to be how every other person in america does it.so i'm still on the fence about the right/wrong way.but i agree...i'm more worried about being stabbed by a fork than a butterknife. but i also still dump out the basket when unloading silverware so getting stabbed isn't a huge worry to begin with.
11/23/2010 11:08:33 PM
Point down, because she might get cut.]
11/23/2010 11:09:58 PM
everything down.
11/23/2010 11:14:26 PM
that's a good question. I don't do the dishes in my house, so hell if I know...
11/23/2010 11:19:47 PM
11/24/2010 12:12:22 AM
This thread changed the way I load. I had never considered that utensils might get cleaner if I loaded them pointing up. I just tried it for the first time. I still pointed the sharp knives down.
11/24/2010 12:14:43 AM
11/24/2010 12:17:49 AM
you could always just wash your hands before you unload the dishwasher
11/24/2010 12:19:48 AM
everything pointing down
11/24/2010 12:24:51 AM
I have a fantastic dishwasher that I habitually overload. I washed my hands before unloading.
11/24/2010 12:38:05 AM
my dishwasher is broken she said i didnt care about her feelings so she left disclaimer: i didnt read the whole thread
11/24/2010 7:17:48 AM
knives and everything else down, only exception is forks. I do forks up.
11/24/2010 7:44:48 AM
Everything pointed up. My compartment for utensils even has slots that makes them impossible to use unless you're putting your forks/spoons in handle down. I feel like the eating part of the utensil gets a direct blast of water if placed handle down, and when I go to empty the dishwasher I wash my hands with soap first. My basket is like this so it would make more sense to load it pointing up. What about the rest of your dishes? I guess if you're worried about contaminating your dishes you just may be a shitty handwasher.[Edited on November 24, 2010 at 8:08 AM. Reason : ds]
11/24/2010 7:59:25 AM
Knives pointed up. Years of them being loaded pointing down cut through the basket at my last rental house.
11/24/2010 9:03:47 AM
Never put nice knives in the dishwasher. For the rest, what do I care?I put forks and spoons in half up, half down. Don't want anything nesting inside each other when the dishwasher is running. Butter knives get thrown in pretty randomly.
11/24/2010 9:07:29 AM
Interestingly enough, this is one of the most hotly debated topics on TWW in 2010. I mean, i'll be honest, i could probably get enough righteous indignation over this to stab someone.
11/24/2010 9:21:55 AM
this nesting is a myth.
11/24/2010 9:36:55 AM
Pointing down, son.
11/24/2010 10:00:12 AM
Everything pointing down.Would someone explain to me why you would put them in pointing up?? What's the theory that they get cleaned better that way, because that would be the only reason to do it in my mind.
11/24/2010 10:08:29 AM
^My guess is that more of the water spray gets to parts you put on your food/in your mouth when it isn't obstructed by the plastic basket. My answer to the OP is neither. My wife loads the dishwasher.
11/24/2010 10:30:54 AM
Nesting is real. It's not pretty. Education is the only way to solve this issue.
11/24/2010 10:54:49 AM
Nesting is definitely real. I used to separate forks, spoons, and knives by basket because I can be a bit OCD about those things, but since switching it up, no occurrences of spooning spoons.I point the knife blades down, everything else up. I think pointing up gets things cleaner but I don't want to cut myself on the end of a steak or paring knife. I wash my hands before unloading so it's not a re-dirtying issue. Good knives (of which I currently have very few) and any large knife, whether good or not, get hand-washed.
11/24/2010 11:20:53 AM
Everything pointing up, except sharp knives. Shitty dishwasher won't get them fully clean in the down position. Also, dropping the utensils in the tray w/o touching the food part takes no effort whatsoever.
11/24/2010 11:40:26 AM
I hand wash my dishes.
11/24/2010 11:44:56 AM
I've seen all the Final Destination movies, so I only use plastic utensils
