^^ it's more common than you think.

I agree that it is second rate. It's not really a holiday, more so a historical commemoration. During the time that the Greeks had seized Jerusalem, the Jews were not allowed to study Torah or celebrate their holidays. When they fought back and defeated the Greeks, they had an 8-day festival to make up for missing Sukkot in the fall. So now we have two different 8-day long festivals every year. The present giving is mainly an Americanized thing so Jewish children would stop bitching about not getting presents around Christmas time.[Edited on December 1, 2010 at 11:27 AM. You either win all, win half, lose one, or nothing happens.1/2 chance of winning something1/4 chance of losing (and you only lose a tiny bit)[Edited on December 1, 2010 at 1:25 PM. Reason : -]

I should make some apple challah this weekend
12/1/2010 2:14:05 PM
I'm making tie-dye challah for Friday night (bake rainbow sprinkles on the inside and they melt to create an awesome effect)
12/1/2010 3:21:22 PM
I lit candles last night, I'm curious as to how many people will try to figure out what's going on again this year.Tie-dye challah sounds fantastic... you could add a different color to each piece before it's braided, that'd be interesting. And it's the wrong season for apple challah, that's a rosh hashanah thing.

jackie chanukah?
12/3/2010 1:03:13 PM
I thought this was later on in the month, closer to christmas time.
12/3/2010 1:30:05 PM
Jewish holidays are set on a different calendar that goes by cycles of the moon. Our year is shorter, so each year the holidays get earlier and earlier. Then we'll have a leap year, where instead of just adding an extra day, we add a whole extra month (which again, is a single cycle of the moon). So sometimes Chanukah will overlap Christmas, and every so often it can even overlap Thanksgiving. This is a leap year (the extra month is added in the spring) so next year Chanukah will be much later in December.

Just scoured facebook for a picture of our menorah. I just dug it out of the closest recently. Its a dinky little electronic one. You can screw the lights in or out to light them up or not. It has fallen into disrepair in recent years as you can see.Happy Hallowanukahmas to all!

Was it a minivan? Cuz if so, it was Rabbi Herman's car, he's the head Rabbi at Sharei Israel, the shul you were talking about. He does it every year. It's a lot less tacky than random reindeer antlers I've seen on people's cars.
