Ok all I need help. I've been apartment looking amd got some nice places picked but I can't decide where to live. Ill be working in rtp, and have places there I like but also have one place by campus I like. I can't decide which and its down to the area now. Campus is where everyone I know and what I do is by, rtp is by work ( I can walk to work from most of them.) Price is more at rtp but its not a too major consideration. Aaaaah! Please help me figure out!

Live where you play. Not where you work.
1/3/2011 2:08:28 PM
I mean- what kind of commute can you tolerate? I personally don't mind the 20-30 minute commute to work, but it is nice to be able to not have to worry about that everyday, pay for gas, etcbut moving away from your friends and local activities will really decrease how much of those you will do. you have to go to work, you don't have to go meet your friends for a couple of drinks, and that drive will affect your decisions to come back to this side of town, whether you think it will now or not. I personally would stay around south/central raleigh as long as I could unless I had to leave town all together

Yeah, the drive on I40 during the week is absolutely terrible (as everyone knows). Some of my friends (you know who you are) say they are pretty much locked down until around 7pm, and they live out in RTP.

you should probably just live in my apartment. My boyfriend made that drive and loved it. ^^shut up! [Edited on January 3, 2011 at 2:14 PM. Reason : ^]

I'm saying if he lived in RTP he would have a hard time coming back to campus area for fun.
1/3/2011 2:15:15 PM
My apartment is about a 15 minute drive from campus and a 20 minute drive from RTP. Best of both worlds
1/3/2011 2:16:34 PM
^^yup. say bye to your friends. it'd be RTP sports bars and Durham titty joints for nightlife. ^ except for the fact you have to live in some shitty suburb like Apex or Morrisville.[Edited on January 3, 2011 at 2:18 PM. Reason : ]

My house is about a 10 minute drive from work and a 2.5 hour drive from campus. Its pretty terrible.[Edited on January 3, 2011 at 2:17 PM. Reason : ]

yeah, I bet you wish you had made this thread yourself, huh??
1/3/2011 2:26:35 PM
i live 5 minutes from work (10 if traffic is awful) and 10 minutes from my usual group of friendsgo me.

I'd say live closer to friends/campus...the work week is just that, the work week....you can always do happy hour in RTP with the co-workers...but come the weekend, you don't want to drive 20min to campus area/downtown...live closer to where you play...myself, im getting a house 3min from the beach, 15-20min from work next week when I move to Clearwater, FL (Tampa area)
1/3/2011 2:49:49 PM
Don't live in RTP. A short commute is very nice, granted, but RTP sucks. Nothing fun is there and, depending on where in RTP you are, it might even be a drive to things like grocery stores. However, living in Raleigh and working in RTP will be traffic HELL. I go the opposite way (live in SE Durham and work on campus) and the traffic on 40 Eastbound after work every day is always bumper to bumper, dead stop. Thankfully I'm going the other way.Have you considered living in Durham? The commute to your friends and well-known hangouts won't be that much worse than it would be going from RTP, the commute would be an easy 15-20 minutes going against the prevailing traffic, and your immediate surroundings would suck less.[Edited on January 3, 2011 at 2:55 PM. I live less than a mile from work and right in downtown. But I agree with, live where you play.
1/3/2011 2:59:29 PM
I recommend one of those apartment complexes by Trinity Rd. and Nowell Rd. About 10 minutes from campus, and if you need to get on 40 to go to work, exit 290 is a great exit to avoid some traffic.
1/3/2011 3:04:29 PM
I live off of Lynn Rd but work for Duke...10 min drive to downtown Raleigh, 30 mins to work. I don't mess with 40 though...glenwood to alexander then right to 147
1/3/2011 3:05:15 PM
I just use wade straight onto 40... pretty nice (avoids the shithole that is the us-1 interchange)
1/3/2011 3:05:35 PM
The commute isnt a problem, its 20-30 mins for me, I did it for a year before.

people rarely post reviews when they're happy, but they can't wait to post reviews when they're pissed off. you can really only judge by the relative number of bad reviews.

I'd probably go for the live near where you work option.Which option will save you more on gas? Which option will save you more time overall?Sure adding 20 minutes to your comute a day might not seem like a lot, but by the time you do that every weekday for a year, that is a lot of time lost that you could have used for any number of things.I mean if you hate your job, or if its pretty temporary job, or if you hate your coworkers then being far away might be better. But I'd definitely go for whichever option would save me the most $/time overall. If you go out 7 nights a week and work 5 days a week, then go play option. If you only go out on the weekends but work 5 days a week, then go work option IMO.
1/3/2011 6:26:10 PM
^ made sense to me.i dont regret living <8 minutes away from work. it's nice to swing by the apt and watch netflix during lunch instead of eating at the bullshit cafev how is it that you keep running into your work people? unless you live in a boring location where there's only one shopping area for like the whole town (morrisville), you won't have that issue if you live someplace more busy. and as far as "going out on the weekends", why not just drive a little further?[Edited on January 3, 2011 at 6:40 PM. for me, it's not just going out on the weekends when i don't want to see work-related people, it's even the grocery store, gas station, fast food, etc. i just want to keep my work and personal lives as separate as possible
1/3/2011 6:34:39 PM
I never minded the commute (and could take care of phone calls or just relax in my car). I wouldn't go out or do nearly as much stuff out of my house if I lived 5 times are far away from everything as I do now. And I would hate to become a homebody
1/3/2011 6:35:56 PM
I live in Cary(over by Cary HS) and work off Kitt Creek Rd. It takes me about 20 minutes to get to work and that's mostly from stop lights. Most all my friends that I hang out with regularly live within about 5 minutes of me. So I like where I live. I guess if you're talking about a 30+ minute commute it might make more sense to live closer to work. But I build in the time it takes to get to work into my day and I'd rather live closer to my friends/etc because its more convenient to get together. If I lived in Morrisville or Durham I'd probably never see them and would probably hang out with new friends I made where I lived.

I live in south Raleigh but work in south Durham. I don't mind the commute because my company does flex time and I'm given the option to work from 7-3. Definitely makes the commute 10 times easier when I'm traveling before rush hour sets in. Does your company offer that? If so then it would be worth to stay in Raleigh and commute into RTP. I will say the only downsize is the rising gas prices. It makes me when I have to fill up every week because of the commute.

I too am looking for a shit hole apt to reside. I have a few videos I want to film.
1/3/2011 10:43:34 PM
I'd rather live closer to the place I go to everyday M-F than an area that I only go to on the weekends.
1/3/2011 11:06:32 PM
Second the "play not work" option for all sorts of reasons. If you like hanging out with your friends regularly and they don't have a reason to drive to RTP, you'll be stuck driving to them all the time anyway. And if "play" involves things that might prevent you from driving yourself home...well, taxis ain't getting any cheaper the farther you have to go.I've never understood the pathological aversion to commuting, possibly because I've done so much of it in my life. Unless you're the type to get really worked up when you drive, it offers a good time to get your thoughts together before work or to decompress after it.

In this case it's less an issue of being an alcoholic and more an issue of being a nazi about drunk driving.I'm perfectly happy with hanging out with a buddy for a couple of hours and having three beers, which I don't think qualifies as alcoholic behavior. I'm NOT happy with driving after three beers in a couple of hours, which puts me in the awkward position of either having to get a cab to whatever or telling my friend, "Hey man, can I crash at your place, I've had these three beers..."
1/4/2011 2:31:35 AM
i'd rather live closer to where i play and farther from workwhen i get off work, i want to be as far from work as possiblei need that separation, i don't want my boss/team paging me to come in just b/c i'm close, i don't want to run into work ppl, i don't want to feel like i left work but then not really, i need work-life balancealso to me enjoying life is more important than work.....who knows where i'll be working tomorrow or next year, so i don't need to depend where i live on where i work
1/4/2011 3:10:47 AM
i have this same question but with different areas.what if i'm working part of the week in downtown durham and the other part in downtown raleigh while my roommate works in RTP. What's a good area for us to live? We also tend to spend a good amount of time in downtown raleigh right now.
1/4/2011 4:17:11 PM
He signed a lease, some place right next to RTP/where he works.Be more convincing next time, tww.
1/4/2011 4:40:58 PM
dude i lived near campus (gorman crossings) and worked in RTP for years. its really not a bad commute. the only way you can avoid getting on 40 to get to RTP is if you live in cary/apex and come in the back way or live in NW Raleigh and take 540 or 70. either way they all suck.

I'm going to give the opposite advice from most people. I used to live where I played, I now live where I work. it's better to make the drive once or twice on the weekends instead of every day. especially like someone pointed out, you'll have a SHITTY commute on 40 every day. If you want to visit campus after work, you'll be going the opposite direction and won't have as bad a time. some people don't mind driving but I dislike long drives and I HATE sitting in traffic
1/4/2011 6:14:04 PM
if i had to drive in traffic i'd probably choose to live closer to work, but as it is right now i drive against traffic to/from work so it's pretty smooth sailing
