In terms of interesting people, Cup a Joe in Mission Valley is not remotely equal to Cup a Joe on Hillsborough.
1/23/2011 7:59:38 PM
There's nothing interesting about anyone who goes to Cup a Joe.

I worked at Cup A Joe (not Cup of Joes--read the cups) Mission Valley for almost three years. I wasn't surly enough to work at the Hillsborough St. one. I covered shifts there sometimes and I would smile and wave at the customers and they would glare at me suspiciously. But I'm friendly with most of the weird MV regulars. I still go in there and recognize a lot of people.I'm in a WoW guild with the guys that would go in and play WoW on their laptops.[Edited on January 23, 2011 at 8:14 PM. Yeah, but at MV I didn't have to smell like cigarette smoke. Hills was way gross! But all the cool people in Raleigh have either worked at Cup or dated someone who has

my advisor was (and I would imagine still is) a major coffee addict and would make several trips a day over to the MV CoJ. she would often take me with her, and i have lots of pleasant memories from there
1/26/2011 2:07:38 PM
I've never seen an interesting person actually.
1/26/2011 2:18:30 PM
lots of random weirdos. Hillsborough St location is definitely weirder
1/26/2011 2:33:43 PM
I really liked the nice woman who would sit at MV at night and crochet coffee cup cozies while she was drinking her coffee.
1/26/2011 3:20:33 PM
Can you get her to crochet or knit me a cock and ball coozie? I've seen these before but they have to be custom made, especially for an individual with such a large member as mine son.

I interviewed some current and former Cup A Joe workers, as well as about 8-10 regulars, while researching language in coffee culture and again when I did an observational research paper about Cup A Joe. I was primarily based out of the MV one. I went there solid (once a day, sometimes more) and just sat, watched people, talked to people, and wrote. My conclusions:1) Cup A Joe workers can only be two things: "pretty cool" or "unstable psychopaths".2) Cup A Joe customers can only be two things: "pretty cool" or "unstable psychopaths".Seriously what is wrong with the world. Don't get me wrong, I had a great time, but jesus christ. For example:Cup A Joe at the time had no kind of company history online or in the store, so I started asking workers and supervisors whenever I could. On three separate occasions, twitchy dudes behind the counter accused me of being a spook or a suit. They were convinced that I was either from the IRS or the FBI and that I was "trying to pin something" on the owners, even after I told them about my paper and my writing. One in particular, a guy named Jeff who looked and sounded like he was on heroin, thought I was part of a sting operation, and refused to even serve me for like three days in a row.Mind you, I look and act nothing like a professional. I guess I'm deep undercover. The workers that would talk to me (most of them) didn't know ANYTHING about the company, not even basic information I was able to gleam. Even long-time workers. Instead of telling me about their history, almost every worker told me about how they suspected other people that worked for the owners were drug-dealers that were on payroll for convenience, and that Cup A Joe's history included a lot of drug distribution on the side. The customers were actually a lot more sane, especially the seedy looking regulars--almost all of them turned out to be incredibly interesting people, and I wish I'd gotten more about some of them written down. All of this has just made me love Cup A Joe more. I guess you could say it has character. I might try and apply for a part-time position there later in the year, since I've done barista work before, and I'm great at ignoring customers.

I didn't fit in well with Cup A Joe because I'm so perky and customer-oriented. They don't educate their employees about the company history. I knew a lot about it because I worked there so long. When did you do your paper? I was there on and off between May 2007 and May 2010.Your assessments appear accurate.
1/26/2011 7:45:17 PM
I would have been up in your grill girl.
