1/25/2011 11:46:35 AM

I was born in England and live in Cary, but I've lived in NC more than anywhere elseAm I a southerner?
1/25/2011 2:25:23 PM
Depends. Where are your parents from?
1/25/2011 2:25:58 PM
^^ no! You're a goddamn red coat. We done kicked your kind out twice.
1/25/2011 2:27:18 PM
If I grew up in Cary, why would that not make me a part of North Carolina?
1/25/2011 2:28:23 PM
a lot of people say that i have an accent and ask where i'm from, but my dad was from fuquay and my mom has lived here since high school. i think they just get thrown off that i don't have a southern accent.i certainly know a lot of NY/PA/IL/MA people in Cary, but most of my friends are "good ol' boys"
1/25/2011 2:29:37 PM
^^ Cary is like an embassy. It is sovereign NY soil.[Edited on January 25, 2011 at 2:32 PM. Reason : *]

It drives me nuts to hear people complaining about not having an identity when- Their parents immigrated and they grew up in Cary- Their parents came from up north and they grew up in CaryNot everyone can identify themselves with a state in the first place. Ever met a military brat? And if you are from another country and never even had the chance for citizenship in that nation, you are not special, you are one of us.Citizenship is more than sufficient to define identity in a civil society such as ours. If the place you came from looks to ethnicity for identity, we don't care. You don't have a dual identity. You have a different identity in a different value system.[Edited on January 25, 2011 at 2:33 PM. Reason : ]

You're a goddamned YANKEE, that's what you are.Yankee genes gets passed from the father.
1/25/2011 2:37:00 PM
If thats the case, I am genetically from the deep south but raised in Cary
1/25/2011 3:00:09 PM
I don't think anyone with non-southern parents can really become southern, no matter how long they live here... People usually try and hide their hick ways, not the other way around
1/25/2011 3:09:09 PM
^^^^my mom is from just north of Binghamton
1/25/2011 3:13:05 PM

Guide to Identifying Southerners:-Has Accent-Says dumb shit like calling shopping carts "buggies" or all soft drinks "coke"-Loves nascar-Flies Rebel flag and pretends it isn't racist-Flies Rebel flag and openly admits it's racist-Wears camo patterned hats/overalls & other "hunting gear" in non-hunting scenarios-Pretends to have a monopoly on politeness/religiousness/"real american"ism-Anti-IntellectualismThe presence of at least 2 of the above indicates a southerner with at least 97% confidence.

^^^Apparently yankees like to make fun of the way I say Appalachian and that i call a tobogan a tobogan.[Edited on January 25, 2011 at 4:19 PM. Reason : g]

Appalachian...My argument is that the pronunciation used at Appalachian State University should win. But that's just me.
1/25/2011 4:28:12 PM
You know the appalachian mountains are in the north too, right?[Edited on January 25, 2011 at 4:30 PM. Reason : actually, going by some of the comments in this thread, 80% of it is in the north]

Born in Charlotte, both parents are from Charlotte. I used to have an accent but made a solid effort to drop it when I was 18. I hate NASCAR, don't care for most country music and baseball. I play and am obsessed with ice hockey. My only saving grace to keeping my "southern" card is that I love sweet tea.
1/25/2011 4:33:41 PM
I play the banjoobviously I'm southern

I say buggy and love grits, but I hate nascar and sweet tea.
1/25/2011 5:44:42 PM
I was also informed that the way you say "umbrella" tells if you're from a southern backgroundapparently bmel and I say "UHM-brella"... instead of "um-BRella"
1/25/2011 5:45:42 PM
southern is a state of mind
1/25/2011 5:45:57 PM

Southern is not so much about location as it is state of mind, hence the Cary exclusion.[Edited on January 25, 2011 at 5:58 PM. Reason : NeuseRvrRat beat me to the same idea.]
