It makes perfect sense because there is no number between.99999.... and 1.If there is nothing between the numbers, then it must be the same number.
2/10/2011 8:38:49 PM
makes sense to me
2/10/2011 8:39:56 PM
And guess what...1/3 = 0.33333so 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = 3/3 = 1 BUT0.33333 + 0.33333 +0.33333 = 0.99999so0.99999 = 1AMAZING

My mind was blown when I took MA 241 and the bonus question on the exam was to identify the representation of the parabolic curve of y= x^4 located in the architecture of the campus somewhere. Turned out to be the side profile of the back to back benches following the circumference of Harrelson. Mind BLOWN, HOWEVER Harrelson still gets water puddles on the roof. Engineering fail. And FTW this was in 2002. Nine years ago. Mind...STILL BLOWN.

some people have too much time on their hands

I think this guy showed me that school_instructor.aspx?department=MA&instructor=3043
2/10/2011 8:45:46 PM
Yeah that was him. He was definitely a hard ass, but you had to respect him. I mean, fuck, I am still talking about what he taught me NINE YEARS later and yes it HAS helped me, and I HAVE had to work in engineering and yeah...he always WAS willing to help if you were willing to WORK!Off the soapbox.

I like the randomly capitalized words.

Does school tool work anymore? Was a great feature of this site circa 2003
2/10/2011 8:51:21 PM
I wish there were people as cool as US right now on TWW back THEN when the site first came out so I could poll the people from 92-93 about shit when I was in school.Of course the site was brand new and stark full of naked pics which obviously had more value for me then than now, so I guess I'll take what I can get.Basically what I am saying is that if you're in school right now you're totally missing out on a wealth of knowledge if you think facebooks is the alpha and omega of all that is tits. Because it is not.

So what you're saying is that infinite penalties on the defense when the offense is at first and goal will not only asymptotically approach touchdown, it IS a touchdownMIND = BLOWN
2/10/2011 9:27:40 PM
if you have an infinite amount of time then you will get a touchdownshit gets tricky when you deal with infinitely many operations, like you can make an alternating series that is conditionally but not absolutely convergent end up summing to anything you want

FML I DON'T GET IT This is like the...EIGHTH time I haven't understood math or something if I am counting correctly
2/10/2011 9:58:45 PM
I'll spell it out for you...1 obviously can't be less than 0.999... because it has a greater leading digit (the ones digit)so 1-0.999... must be non-negativenow for every positive number, you can show that 1-0.999... must be less than that (basically, imagine truncating the decimal expansion of 0.999... to some large finite number, so that the difference between the truncation and 1 is less than any given positive number but obviously also more than 1-0.999...)and by the Archimedean property of the real numbers, the only non-negative number smaller than all positive numbers (other than possibly itself) is 0so 1-0.999...=0so 0.999...=1

I AM STILL CONFUSED

Well I think what's really important here is that we all had a good run and we can all agree to disagree for math is very complex and the true power of it all we may never really know. Everyone gets an A for trying, and remember I boost scores by 10% for attendance (even if you sleep).

stategrad100, which state university did you attend?

Makes perfect sense to me....(math major)
2/11/2011 9:14:18 AM
2.3 + 2.3 = 4.6ROUND2 + 2 = 5
2/11/2011 9:20:21 AM
sig figs gives you the right answer
2/11/2011 9:25:20 AM
I can't believe you tried to fit all of that in a thread title.[old], but still intriguing

Give me any odds of what you think aliens existing is.Let's do something small.Let's do something like...."There's a 1-.999... out of 1x10^-10 chance."That means there's a one in ten billion chance of aliens existing. Is that not rare enough for you? Okay. Let's do 1-.999... out of 1x10^-15. That's a one in one quadrillion chance.Based on observations from the Hubble Space Telescope, there are at least 125 billion galaxies in the universe. It is estimated that at least ten percent of all sun-like stars have a system of planets, there are 6.25×10^-18 stars with planets orbiting them in the universe. If even a billionth of these stars have planets supporting life, there are some 6.25×10^-9 (billion) life-supporting planetary systems in the universe.0.00000000625Now, what are the odds that NONE of these have any life on them?[Edited on February 11, 2011 at 12:13 PM.
