who should be held responsible? Republicans or Democrats and why?Republicans really want the economy to fail on Obama's watch so they can try to take back the presidency. The GOP hasn't done shit to help with job creation. They're looking to cut funding to Planned Parenthood, gut Medicaid and privatize SS.

While I generally vote republican I'm not happy with either party and their economic policy right now. I think that Republicans have better policy for job creation. But some of their policies on Social Security and Environmental policy are borderline ludicrous. It's painfully obvious they're caving for votes on something more important or funding. But until our budget is some semblance of under control I'll vote for whoever is cutting from it at nearly any expense. Healthcare, Social Security, Environment, a myriad of crappy social programs - they're all on the block. Our balls are in China's hands until we get this junk straight.

What is the republican policy for economic growth? Stop abortions?

don't forget to let the rich have their tax cuts so they can save thousands on taxes to put away in some savings account or buy a few expensive pieces of jewelry or a foreign sports car.[Edited on April 7, 2011 at 11:10 PM. Reason : troll troll troll your boat ]

The babies that the republicans are trying to save with their anti-abortion laws are the same babies the republicans will be pissed off about in 30 years when these babies go on welfare.

well, i don't know if i agree with that, exactly...some dumb bitch dressed like a whore who decides to get stoned out of her gourd at a party where she doesn't know anyone, who happens to wake up the next morning in the bed of some dude she doesn't know, with no recollection of the night before, may or may not have been rapedit simply isn't black and white...against their expressed will and against their better judgment when judgment isn't impaired by other bad choices are not the same thing, though there are certainly some women who would assert that they are...just like there are guys that assert that stoned whores are fair gamebut this isn't a thread about what's rape and what isn't...this is about how much we hate spray-tan boehner

There is nothing wrong with consumer spending as long as they are spending their own money and not borrowing for it. For as irresponsible as the consumers have been, the banks and credit card companies have been equally as irresponsible by handing out ridiculous amounts of credit to undeserving candidates.

so the government will shut down because the Republicans think NOW is the time to push through amendments that seriously undermine the well-being of the environment, a woman's right to choose, limits the powers of the President (at least when it comes to healthcare, climate change, global warming, closing Guantanamo Bay, pay and fairness), and prohibits social programs that would improve the District of ColumbiaFUCK
4/8/2011 11:50:21 AM
Since this is chit chat...If the government shuts down they shouldn't be allowed to collect taxes during the period of time they are shut down. No fed sales tax, fed gas tax, fed income tax (prorated), etc.[Edited on April 8, 2011 at 12:15 PM. Reason : -]

Looks like the GOP is working hard on crashing the economy by refusing to raise the debt ceiling.

4/18/2011 5:18:46 PM
i dont know if raising the debt ceiling would be a good idea. i honestly cant say that im an expert in economics or anything, so my thoughts could use tweaking, but why in the world would you do that?[Edited on April 18, 2011 at 5:22 PM. Reason : s]
4/18/2011 5:19:34 PM
some debt is sustainable, if you put it toward something that is an investment.for example, before the interstate system was built, it took forever to get across the country. it cost a fuck ton of money to build all those roads, but it opened up the ability to transport goods, expand the economy, etc. the country can see positive yields if they invest money wisely. (building nice schools makes communities attractive)spending money on stupid shit isnt sustainable, you wont see returns from that money, it's not an investment.kinda like spending 2 grand on putting a new energy efficient roof on your house, versus rims for your car. only problem is, we've spent so much on rims and tires-- we still need to replace the roof, but then theres windows that need to be replaced, the a/c is broken, and we now have to take out more money instead of spending what we could afford bits at a time.[Edited on April 18, 2011 at 5:35 PM. To grossly over-simplify, if the debt ceiling is not raised, when we hit it, the treasury would not have the authority to borrow any more money. At that point, we would immediately have to substantially cut spending or raise taxes to cover the shortfall. And as puck_it said, some debt is sustainable, depending on what it's going towards. What is more likely they would continue to borrow, but acknowledge that we cannot pay in full the amount of public debt (US Bonds) and the country goes into partial default. With the dollar being the most widely held reserve currency in the world today, the effect of that would be huge.
