how long are you awake every 30 minutes? i find that i'm pretty good at acting awake and not remembering it later, so as long as I'm not waking up and doing some math problems I should be fine]

The brain would eventually adapt to the "waking up" process happening like clockwork, and the 8 hrs would eventually become like regular sleep cycle because you'd be as conditioned as a habitual snooze button user.Meanwhile 2 hrs only would lead to an untimely early death.These are my thoughts.

no, 30minutes would be worse, as you are not entering the recuperative mode of sleep. 2 hours, even though it is short, is at least allowing you enter that mode. The 8 hours is giving you no benefit

Well I guess we could debate about it, but this question has already been answered with all the research that's been done in the field of sleep research, so maybe he's just trying to get us to do his homework for him.The process of creating circadian rhythms and the comparative value of REM sleep are questions that have all been answered.I believe researchers found that neither circumstance is ideal, but that 2 hrs a night is unsustainable.However, I am too lazy to google anything for this.

I can answer this from personal experience. When I am deployed on my sub, I get woken up a LOT for slightly bullshit reasons. Being an officer, well I have to be alerted when any of my equipment had an issue, etc, even though it could have easily waited until morning. I had nights where this happened repeatedly, such that I never really reached any deep (REM??) sleep.The next day I felt to shitty I could barely function, had a headache, etc. I also had nights of only 2 hours of sleep (many actually). Your body learns to recover itself in those two unbroken hours. I woke up feeling kind of tired, but definitely refreshed. Broken sleep is the worst fucking sleep you can get, that I can promise you.

One time I got into the habit of sleeping 12 hours every other night. I was incredibly productive at night when everyone else was sleeping but it killed any social interaction I had with people because on day 2 I was fading fast after 5pm and crashed hard by 8pm.

Personal anecdote:I have come into periods of my life where I get significant broken sleep for various reasons. Working all the time, up at 2 AM, sleeping at weird hours. I even invented a name for the randomness that the schedule took on sometimes. I called it the schedule of threes and nines.Wake up at 9 AM, go to bed at 3 PM, wake up at 9 PM, go to bed at 3 AM, and then wake up again at 9 AM....it's actually really awesome because you can be out and about during the normal day to get stuff done and then be well rested for partying.But anyway, I find that during painful periods of not sleeping, I gain weight, turn into an even bigger a-hole than I am now, and I am generally unhappy. The damage caused by two days of work with poor sleep is worse than one day of work after being well rested.

I get 2-3 hours of sleep per night pretty consistently. It's sad, but those 6 hours at night are the only time I can find that I don't have someone or something eating up my time. I'm in class 9-11, I get an hour for lunch, then I'm at work from 12:30-9. Getting up at around 7:00, the hours of 10-4 are when I get my entertainment/fap/homework/otherwork done.I am also a zombie all day, and have very little recollection of what goes on.

honestly i'd rather get that 2 hour solid block...that deep cycle is necessary as shit for mental acuity. unless i dug ditches for a living, in which case i'd opt for the punctuated 8nothing against digging ditches i just don't think it requires nightly intellectual consolidationalso i have ZERO regularity with sleeping. between bartending and school i just say fuck it and sleep when i can. i'll switch daily between sleeping at night and sleeping during the day while varying the amount of time for each. power naps in opportune places basically keep me from imploding[Edited on April 19, 2011 at 6:42 AM. isn't there that pattern of cycling your sleep, like 30 minutes every 2-4 hours and you can get by with 4 hours of sleep a day?but you're tired as hell the first month or so
