a bachelors is the new high school diplomayou'd have gotten as much (if not more) value out of learning a trade straight out of high school...saved a boatload of money, too[Edited on May 11, 2011 at 1:39 PM. Reason : .]

5/11/2011 2:42:48 PM
definitely an accomplishmentnow is the time to start lobbying Congress to cut back on educational funding and to increase the number of disqualifiers from the FAFSA to preserve the equity of your accomplishment, i.e. if you ever jaywalked or accidentally walked into the lady's room you should be prohibited from getting any educational funding, especially since Obama nationalized the processDo you know how many people finish college? I don't know, but it's comparative to the amount of cars on the interstate - too many

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU I HAVE ONE MORE EXAM AND IT'S GOING TO RAPE MEi failed my analytical chemistry exam. dropped my grade a full letter grade fmllllllllll
5/11/2011 2:54:43 PM
^^^ i meant in general...i don't think that a bachelors degree is "worth" as much as (or more than) it was 15-20 years ago
5/11/2011 2:56:45 PM
Not trying to turn this into a political argument, but I think increasing the quantity of educated workers creates a more functional and prosperous society (i.e. Someone who has a bachelors with communications is more productive socially, culturally and economically than someone with a high school diploma).
5/11/2011 2:58:35 PM
Real world [bold]HELL[/bold] season 666
5/11/2011 3:00:12 PM
oh, i agreebut when you increase the education level of the average person, then those falling below that stand out even more in their lack of educationso if 50% of the population has a BS/BA and 20% have an advanced degree, that means that the 30% with a high school diploma or less are going to be eligible for even fewer jobs and for lesser pay, since competition will lower the entry salary of those BS/BA folks
5/11/2011 3:02:53 PM
I'd argue that in this economy, and going forward, any academic degree isn't worth it's weight in gold compared to real world work experience. More people get jobs because of work experience than Masters degrees in this economy.Try applying to a job with no work experience, but a BS and an MBA. Most jobs want 6 years work experience with portfolios, projects, or some kind of results to back up your credibility. Your best bet to stay competitive is to have both, and if you must sacrifice one, it should be the Masters degree. Obviously you should get both if you can afford it. I just think it's funny seeing these kids with 50k in student loan debt with bachelors and masters degrees, working for 35k a year. They could have been making that and going to school simultaneously, which would jump-start them into a much higher salary after getting the grad degree. Parallel processing your work and academic standings is where it's really at in this economy. Possibly getting your company to absorb some of the costs of the graduate degree is super smart.[Edited on May 11, 2011 at 3:12 PM. Reason : -]

5/11/2011 3:28:09 PM
^^I'm so glad I held out until I got a decent job....I'm definitely gonna let this company absorb my master's degree since they will pay for 100% of it
5/11/2011 3:35:58 PM
I have a Master's degree but little work experienceit is exceptionally difficult for me to find a job right now
5/11/2011 3:40:01 PM
5/11/2011 3:41:03 PM
hooray! i also just finished college - for the 2nd time in my life, but most likely not the last time. woooo student for life[Edited on May 11, 2011 at 9:34 PM. Reason : ]

Well I think what has happened is the devaluation of the high school diploma even more now that everyone has a college degree.People who only graduate high school and don't go to college aren't even really employable. We need to cut the flood gates clogging our universities with the worthless masses and ruining the prestige of a degree.Give me the crack emoticon all you want, but if you're a skeptical female and didn't acheive your MRS during your bachelors years, you also are an epicfail. Go study elementary education.
5/11/2011 9:30:45 PM
funny you should say that
5/11/2011 9:31:53 PM
5/11/2011 9:58:50 PM
suspend opbut srsly... good job. feels good dont it??
5/11/2011 10:18:59 PM
peeps for a college degree the unemployment rate is about 4.5%, HS degree about 9.5%, and dropouts, 13% or so.....so a college degree is NOT the new high school degree.....is passing the 8th grade the new high school degree?!?!?![Edited on May 11, 2011 at 10:25 PM. Reason : w]
5/11/2011 10:24:33 PM

5/12/2011 12:25:22 PM
^^Yeah if you get a master's degree work experience is a given. You're already supposed to have contacts and experience in your field.
5/12/2011 12:34:55 PM
I internedin my field interns are not typically offered a job^ what did you get your Master's degree in?[Edited on May 12, 2011 at 12:54 PM. Reason : -]
5/12/2011 12:53:24 PM
Why did you choose a field with such poor job prospects?
5/12/2011 1:00:02 PM
^^Oh I don't have a masters. I'm just saying most of my friends who have master's have lots of experience and contacts they got through internships, co-ops, and regular jobs. You've got to be pretty lazy or unmotivated to go all the way through a graduate program without getting any experience in your area of interest.
