Burn 'em off with a cigarette.
5/20/2011 12:48:17 PM
Wait for it.
5/20/2011 12:48:50 PM
haha I wasn't putting a cigarette any where near where I found these two

I've had 12 on me so far this year, none attached. I always burn them with a lighter when I find one and one of them flew around like a deflating balloon when I lit him up.I started watching "under the skin" on Netflix last night. A pretty eye opening documentary about Lyme disease.

With my work I have to walk through the woods. I flicked over 40 off my pants yesterday. I have already lost track of how many I have pulled off me. I freaking hate them. Once you find one on crawling on your body you get all paranoid.

Several years ago while I was working for a surveyor, we were working on easements for a new greenway near Green Hope. The ticks were so bad that they would jump off of us and live in the truck overnight and be on us the next morning before we got to the jobsite.I have pulled more ticks off of me in my lifetime than I care to count. Its a miracle I haven't gotten Lyme's Disease.I have an office jerb now, so...2011 - mdozer73: 0[Edited on May 20, 2011 at 3:39 PM. Reason : http://youtu.be/3tiPndMqxLQ]

I had one on me, not actually in me though, just crawling on my leg. I have a feeling my new neighborhood has a lot of ticks, there was a urgent care clinic down the road that had "We have Lyme Disease vaccines here" on their marquee the other daymy stepdad was here last week and said that he found a tick in him a couple weeks ago, pulled it out, DIDNT get a rash, but still went to the doctor and got Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted fever vaccines. Hes a good ole boy too, I'm surprised he would be such a pansy about a tick bite
5/20/2011 5:50:19 PM
I'm a computer nerdwe don't get bitten by ticks or tan in the summer
5/20/2011 7:10:51 PM
had one on me after walking through junk while fishing this morning. Hadn't latched on too strong yet.

My cousin was diagnosed with Lyme Disease last year. They found the tick on top of her head. From the area she was infected ended up causing a lot of fluid build up/pressure around her brain. After 4 spinal taps in less than a year she decided to have surgery. They split her head open and separated some parts under the skull so the fluid could move more freely. She is much better now - she has all her vision back and her hair is growing back as well.
5/20/2011 9:24:20 PM
yeah I wouldnt mess with Lyme Disease, but everything i've read about it is that the tick needs to be in you for a while to transmit the disease.

Today marks like the 5th my mother has gotten... we've caught them all, but it's still ridiculous.

If this is a competition, I wanna know what I'll win.And last year it seemed as though people were counting ticks found crawling on them, not bites. I've had 4 this month that I remember, but many more since January.
5/20/2011 10:55:07 PM
None yet, but after next weekend when I go home I expect to hit double-digits quickly.Living in the woods is nice but has some dangerous side-effects.

^ Gosh that's so horrible man, but I am glad to hear it turned out ok.
5/21/2011 12:20:02 AM
Thanks I am too. She's like a little sister to me so it was very scary around the beginning of the year. Moral of the story: ticks are no joke.
5/21/2011 12:21:05 AM
How long do these vaccines last for?
5/21/2011 11:01:49 AM

Rocky Mountain Spotted fever almost killed my aunt last year, she still has not fully recovered. She was unconscious for weeks in ICU.
5/21/2011 3:11:40 PM
It got my dad pretty bad when I was a kid- I know he was in the hospital for several weeks because of it. That's why I want someone who knows more about those vaccines to come in here and learn me some on them since this is the first I've heard of them....

I've had RMSF & lyme. The lyme wasn't nearly as bad as that story above & the tick wasn't attached for a huge length of time. Less than 2 hours. I had the tell-tale rash for a couple of days & went to the doc. The blood test showed lyme but also a previous old infection of RMSF. I never had a rash but do remember having flu-like symptoms for a while the year before. I was on antibiotics for 6 weeks (last summer) and you can actually still see the slight ring around where I was bit. It's on the inside of my left calf kinda near my knee.Oh but i just found a tick crawling on my back. I've been running around the woods all day at my parents' house so I'm not surprised. If you're referring to my post about my stepdad getting vaccines I mispoke, he got antibiotics after he was bitten, not vaccines. I've never heard of getting tick vaccines pre-bite, like you would get for the flu every year
5/21/2011 10:32:56 PM
I think I found a small one on me, lightly embedded. Found 2 crawling on my dog a few weeks ago. I need to check her again today since she has been running around in the woods with me. I took a shower so I figure that got them.

Im going back to the sight of last encounter today.... but I will be prepared this time! Spandex undergarments and plento o' bug spray!
5/22/2011 8:24:26 AM
^^i agree. the ones that used to get stuck to my dog as a kid, that had been there just a day or so, were GIGANTIC when we found them. like the size of your thumb. there's no way it was there for 2 years unless she just doesn't bathe, look in a mirror, move, or ever touch her head.

1. treat clothes with permethrin2. tuck in shirt3. tuck pants into boots4. ...5. profit

I work at an animal clinic, and we have noticed a lot more ticks on the animals coming in too. I wonder what is making them worse. I know we had a couple of snow days, but did we have a relatively warm winter and not kill off as many?[Edited on May 30, 2011 at 9:20 AM. Reason : ydx]

Knocks em right out. Between using these products and a little bug spray on occasion I haven't seen a tick in 4 years out here, also helps tremendously with the ants if you use it right. Also don't you people use flea and tick stuff on your dogs??
5/30/2011 9:41:40 AM
I have stuff for my dog- they will still crawl on him though (and occasionally latch on too)haha and I wish I could spray all of sharron harris, milbrook rotary exchange, zebulon, and the rest of the areas I'm going with that stuff. My bug spray usually works pretty well- the two times I have found them on me, I'm pretty sure was a result of times when I didn't use it when I should have.

+ 1 - Tuck pants into boots & wrap seam with tape2 - Tuck Shirt into pants & wrap waist with tape3 - Spray insect repellant in rings around top of boot, below knee, above knee, & at waist. As long as they don't jump on your head, you'll be ok.
5/30/2011 10:37:42 AM
haha I can't play dg in that!
5/30/2011 10:47:34 AM
^we did that while surveying, but it doesn't work for ALL activities.Specifically, if you are tromping through the woods and have no regards for appearance, it can't be beat.
