The last Asian of importance in America is now Dice-K. It's a sad state of affairs.

Ichiro and Matsui > Dice K

Matsui is only still relevant because of his massive porn collection. I'm beat on the Ichiro point though.

The basketball situation in China is pretty interesting. The state-run basketball program has the top coaching, equipment, etc. that only a select few get to use. Children are specifically groomed to be basketball players and some selected for the program are as young as 7. Naturally, when you are trying to guess how good a child will be at basketball, height is a major indicator. China is now left with a squad of tall players but no skill position players like pg.This is a obviously a contrast to America's basketball grooming environment where everyone has access to some coaching and equipment and the best players at skill positions evolve overtime by playing against one another.

Because China isn't as rich as US.

State run systems are better for things like gymnastics but I think competitive and decentralized systems are better for team sports.[Edited on August 16, 2011 at 5:50 PM. Reason : ]
