there's no firework quite like an actual moonshine factory ignitingI heard NASCAR was invented when moonshine smugglers were actually running away from their perpetually exploding factories in Johnston Co.

just to be clear, it is illegal to sell the mortar type fireworks everywhere in NC right?I was in the mountains last weekend and saw some in a tiny gas station. they had a pretty big supply, although they were almost twice as expensive as they are in SC.

I've worked as a fireworks contractor. Short answer: yes, mortars are illegal. Basically anything that actually explodes is illegal--anything that goes up to certain height in the air, et cetera. In essence, any firework actually worth having around is illegal.

thats what i thought. im wondering how they get away with selling them. the gas station is tiny, but it's close to some vacation/touristy places, so they get a lot of out of town traffic

^^^ A little gas station where I grew up used to sell illegal fireworks. The owner was friends with the local police. He also let us buy them, which was pretty cool since we were in middle school or something.

Little places out there in the boonies will definitely sell illegal fireworks. You could never do that on the coast though, because the cops are so balls-out about it, partially because of the Croatan National Forrest and all the protected marshlands. I ran a contract unit for TNT and the cops came by almost every other day trying to "interrogate" me about where "the goo stuff was at". It was pretty pathetic and they eventually got the hint that we only had legal fireworks. Their concern was probably right-on though, because one in four customers would ask me if I had blackcats or m80s under the table.
