Do people still use them?If you use them or know people who do use them do they actually work?[Edited on August 30, 2011 at 11:08 PM. Reason : ]

i see cars with themi used one before i moved to VA (illegal there), but the 2 yrs ive been moved back to NC i never got a new one or tried to find my old one

absolutely. But their effectiveness is severely diminished due to laser cop equipment. You can still detect the laser, but it doesn't bounce around as much allowing you time to slow down. Pretty much if it goes off you're already hosed.

I think they work fairly well. Ka is the cruising radar for most cops in Raleigh but yeah if you get laser'd you're fucked but if you buy a nice radar detector they'll actually pay the ticket for you (and maybe court costs?). Valentine FTW and Escorts are pretty good too. Also Whistler?

They are always a step behind the cops. You will get a nice ticket

you get a speeding ticket?

The laser does not go off until the cop hits the trigger, once cop hits trigger you are clocked if he was aiming at you. Only way you get any warning for laser is if he was clocking a nearby vehicle and your radar detector picked that up and alerted you. Old school radar it still works like a charm.

Knocking on wood as I type this, but I've been driving for ~7 years, and have had a radar detector for probably 3-4 living both in MA and NC. Never been pulled over. Part of it is because I'm not retarded, but the other part is because I know the limitations of it.In my experience, I've only had the laser go off on me once...and it was definitely too late. I wasn't speeding (or at least not bad enough), though. The rest are all Ka band as someone said. I don't always have it on when I drive around town, but if I'm driving from Raleigh to Charlotte, or a similar longer drive, I always use it. The best way to get an idea about how well it works is when you drive by one of those stationary signs that displays your speed.

My $30 radar detector has saved my ass a number of times. I certainly don't rely on it though.

I live in VA. This thread is not relevant to my interests.

radar detectors when used for radar purposes are still very effective. as has been mentioned when it comes to laser, while you have a chance at the detector going off picking up the laser tag typically it won't. also, when you are tagged with laser you are done. it is an instantaneous reading for the most part not allowing you time to react. the only defense against laser is installing a laser jamming system such as Laser Interceptor, Blinders or similar.(5+ years radar detector user here)[Edited on August 31, 2011 at 2:53 AM. I have a V1 and it is an effective tool, but you cant rely solely on it. It has definitely showed me where many of the hiding spots that cops like to use are and it will give me a heads up from over a mile away sometimes on the highway.

NO I didn't get a speeding ticket nor am I actually interested in getting a radar...I just randomly thought about them and realized that no one ever talks about them.

I've thought about getting one but I've only gotten one speeding ticket in my life and it was a bogus one I got thrown out. So I guess I'm doing alright without one
