Before I go make a bigger fool of myself than I normally do...If I do one of those propane tank trade-ins for 17 pounds of gas ("Net weight 17 lbs"), the weight of the new tank should be 17.5 lbs (the tare weight) + 17 pounds of gas = 34.5 pounds.Right?Or is there some funky shit with propane bottles?

The density of compressed liquid propane at 25 °C is 0.493 g/cm3, which is equivalent to 4.11 pounds per gallon. Thus, compressed liquid propane weighs approximately 4.2 pounds per US liquid gallon, at 60 °F. Propane expands 1.5% per 10 °F.

The answer to my question is yes.I had traded the bottle in using the automated kiosk at Home Despot. When I took it back the lady said they had been 'having problems' with the machine.Apparently, 'having problems' means it sells empty bottles.

The only place around that will fill tanks anymore (that I know of) is in Garner, and I don't think it's a whole lot cheaper. But, yeah, next time I'll go to Lowe's.

I got to the Exxon on Walnut across from cookout. It's cheap, fast, and weigh that shit right.

Maybe you should ask Texas State Propane Commissioner Murray Hogarth.
