The dishwasher silverware basket on my mom's new dishwasher is such that you can only put them in handles down. I always go for handles up though. Seems to work.

Ever since I heard a story about someone tripping and impaling themselves on handle down knives, I always do handle up.Never had a problem with it.

handle down, i assume the important part of the silverware washes better if the plastic tray isn't blocking the water jets or whatever happens when it's oni cut my hand pretty bad once on a sharp knife that was angled weird so i couldn't see it, i reached down to pick up the tray and slid my hand right on the point, bled like crazy]
Handle up

I assume they mean butter/table knives.Handle up for all.
9/4/2011 11:07:42 AM
it's better to do it handle down so it drip dries down, but when you empty it you touch the eating side of it-toss up
9/4/2011 11:09:57 AM
handle down with everythingjust be careful not to get cut on those sharp knives
9/4/2011 11:18:14 AM
9/4/2011 11:27:11 AM
it's dependent on how dirty the eating part is.
9/4/2011 11:53:21 AM
depends on where the jets are coming from
9/4/2011 12:07:03 PM
Handle up, except spoons, then it doesnt matter
9/4/2011 12:27:00 PM
Handles up on everything.
9/4/2011 2:15:27 PM
you can grab the utensils by the neck if you take an extra second (if they are handle-down) to avoid touching the eating side

I hate eating at other people's house because everyone has their own way of loading the dishwasher and if you load it wrong, it will be obvious that it was you.
9/4/2011 7:47:14 PM

handles up
9/4/2011 9:04:45 PM
I alternate between the two. First one in that section goes handle down, then the next one is handle up, etc. Can't have to many spoons "spooning" so they never get clean. And I put everything in the dishwasher. I dont' care what the instructions that came with it said. I've never had a problem so far.

All handles up for ease of unloading except for grungy serving or cooking pieces.
9/5/2011 9:38:27 AM
