I ended up going down there today. Here:and the controversial quoteAnd here's the roosevelt memorialand these are just the people camped out in Freedom Plaza

looks like a lot of people like pulling Frankie's finger
10/16/2011 8:57:50 PM
why is the quote controversial?

Saw it about a month ago and thought it was awesome. It was difficult to find though. Didnt see any signs or anything.

There are those that say the quote was taken so far out of context that it changed the meaning and makes MLK seem arrogant.
10/16/2011 9:04:27 PM
Why didnt they finish it?
10/16/2011 9:06:51 PM
I would tend to agree after reading the whole quote that what's on the monument is really a horrible paraphrase.
10/16/2011 9:07:13 PM
the original quote and the paraphrased selection certainly do have differing tones.

I think the story goes that the quote was supposed to go on the wall behind the statue...where there is more room.
10/16/2011 9:07:35 PM
it was supposed to go where the other quote went, and the chinaman who built the statue had already progressed on the side where it is so that the whole quote couldn't fit, so they paraphrased it.

CBS Sunday Morning had a special on it a few months ago on the anniversary of the "I have a dream" speechhttp://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/08/22/sunday/main20095410.shtml?tag=contentMain;contentBody

all in all, the memorial looks very nice.... and the location is very tranquil looking across the tidal basin. I think they did a really nice job.
10/16/2011 9:11:34 PM
Unfortunate paraphrasing, indeed.

What, a street running through the ghetto of almost every city wasn't good enough?
